"The first two professional jobs that I had following my graduation from a fairly liberal, midsized university in Virginia were both in North Carolina, a stark contrast from the openly queer lifestyle that I had taken for granted for while serving as president of my university's Gay-Straight Alliance"

Cool story. The atmosphere on the college campus I attend is so completely different from what it was like in middle school back in the '90s. Being an a*hole is no longer cool. Bigoted and racist remarks are whispered between those assumed to be allies, rather than shouted to the amusement of everyone.
It's pretty cool! Although I still don't quite know what to do when people start whispering that stuff to me, especially if they're being nice to me otherwise - I hate to cause problems for myself where none exist, but I also feel like I'm betraying some poor innocent somewhere when I don't speak up against that sort of thing. But I don't, I keep my mouth shut and my head down and hope the hateful elements of our society are fought against by braver and more noble souls than myself.
