Title: Why am I losing so much weight.
Post by: Angélique LaCava on March 24, 2017, 03:13:48 PM
I've been on hormones almost 16 months and I eat 4 times a day and the things I eat have atleast 300 calories each, I've lost 6 lbs in the last month and now down to 127. Why do y'all think I'm losing weight like this?  I did call my doctor and she's suppose to be calling me back, but I'm worrying.

Most likely you're not eating enough for your size and activity.  1200 cal is what people eat when they diet.

"Dissolving" muscles might be the culprit too.

before hormones I ate one meal a day and maintained my weight. I thought hormones was suppose to slow your matabalism?

When I was 17-19, I took spiro (no E) but quit due to feeling weak. I took it so I could stop masculinizing, if it was possible. I don't know what I would look like if I never took it. The damage was already done though.

Anyways, I reckon it's the muscles dissolving... people were telling me I was looking good, losing weight and all that. I think once 100% of the muscles are gone, you'll stop losing weight.

I'm not a doctor, but it could be bone loss too if the E isn't at the right levels.

Men generally burn more because of greater muscle mass, not because of hormone levels.  But beyond that, if you are losing weight and you don't want to you need to eat more.  Unless you are really short and completely sedentary 1200 cal is not enough.

your not understanding what I'm saying. Before hormones I could eat less than a 1,000 calories and stay the same weight all year long, why after 16 months on hormones am I losing weight. I thought estrogen and testosterone blockers made you gain weight.

No.  They don't make you gain weight.

My testosterone decreased by 821 ng/dl and I lost 40 lbs.

Angélique,
Perhaps the type of calories you're consuming may have boosted your metabolism?  Are you active in a different way?  How has your body composition changed?  Muscle percentage?

It could actually be a sign that you are losing muscle mass. Muscle weights more than fat, so if you're consumming the same calories as before, you likely won't gain weight and may even lose because of the muslce/fat proportion.

Muscle tissue is more metabolically active than fat tissue.  If muscle loss were the issue her metabolism would have dropped, not increased.

Unfortunately, BMI is a useless measure of total weight vs height and doesn't really account for composition.

To me it sounds like your metabolism has been boosted.  Estrogen being brought into the appropriate range for your body makeup can actually boost metabolic efficiency....the same as estrogen deficiencies can lead to cancers, diabetes and obesity.

Being an efficient burner of calories, isn't a bad thing :). Enjoy more throughout the day until things stabilize.

Your metabolic rate is probably higher than 1200 calories., mine is around 1800 calories per day. Spreading meals out over the day is supposed to speed up metabolism versus eating one gigantic meal. I would listen to your body, if you are losing weight (becoming too skinny), then eat a little more to get to a point where you are comfortable. When we change our hormones, we can't always anticipate the collateral changes that can take place. I too lost weight, down about 20 pounds, but my eating habits have changed (become healthier) in addition to losing muscle.
