Title: Dr Bluebond-Langer, Weight Requirements
Post by: Rebecca81 on April 01, 2017, 11:33:46 AM
I had a consult with Dr Zhao and Dr Levine at NYU for GCS. Even though I am obese, I was accepted for surgery. My surgery date was scheduled for June. A couple weeks ago I was called for a consult with their new surgeon, Dr Bluebond-Langer, who will be working in conjunction with them. Does anybody know if she has any weight requirements, can she cancel my surgery? I've been slowly losing weight (about 25lbs this year) so I am trying. My plan all along was to finish my GCS then begin the long process of getting scheduled for bariatric surgery. Anybody that has any insight, please let me know.

Please no judgmental replies

Please no preaching

I love myself big, I prefer myself big.

Thanx folks! :)

Welcome to Susan's Place. You need to call the doctors office about weight requirements and your current loss. One of the problem is skin once stretched may not return to it's original size making it necessary to have a revision. In GCS some of the final shaping may depend on the fat layer underneath the skin and if this shifts, it may affect the outcome as well.

Losing weight at a rate of 25 pounds a year is a nice safe rate and it should make it less difficult for you to control your weight in the future. As of bariatric surgery, I have my reservations about it. When you have it you are placed on a special diet that you must remain on for the remainder of your life. If you don't remain on the diet you can defeat the surgery and will regain the weight that you lost. I have seen others who have done this so my advice is if you are able to lose weight without bariatric surgery, it would be best for you to avoid it.

I have an appointment with Dr Bluebond-Langer the week after next and when I set up my appointment I had sent my paperwork with my height and weight. I'm over 6'5" with a BMI of 31 and her office told me that it was fine for surgery, but Dr Bluebond-Langer would prefer that I lose 20 lbs or more to get my BMI under 30 and I've already lost near 10 of those since then, but I want to lose more for my own health even after the 20 lbs.

I understand because of my weight I may need future revisions, I may have to be more vigilant and careful in my aftercare. Dr Zhao, whom she works with, has worked on girls bigger than myself so I know what to expect after surgery. I'm just hoping this new surgeon doesn't cancel my surgery when the original surgeon was going to. Dr Zhao actually prefers bigger patients because if he needs a skin graft during surgery, he has extra skin to chose from. I've been waiting a long time and I hope my surgery isn't suddenly canceled due to a new surgeon giving me the Axe.
