Title: What did you do on December 31 1999?
Post by: SailorMars1994 on April 04, 2017, 09:40:21 PM
I am curious as to what y'all did on the millenium! Apprently, the world was suppose to crash and die and burn (computers,y2k).. good thing it didnt as I would have only be 5 at the time xD

But what did you all do? I remember it actually rather well for some reason given my age. Me, my dad, his friend (who became my uncle later who i have lost contact with for a number of years) and his friends roomate walked from dads friends house down a long road that took us to downtown and to Victoria British Columbia's inner harbour. I recall watching the fire works kick off and seeing stupid people getting arrested for doing stupid things lol. Apprently according to my dad I was being interview either by a newpaper person or a TV station about all this going on but I was cranky and tired lol. Well, thats how i rang in the new millenium. How about you?

I remember not believing Y2K was going to be an issue; but I really hoped the end was coming...
I was about to turn 10, and my depression had just started.

I owned an Internet Service Provider (ISP), providing web sites, email and Internet connectivity to users around the world.  Although we didn't really expect anything to go wrong, I spent the evening at the office, hitting <refresh> on my web browser to make sure everything kept working.  Of course it did -- rather anticlimactic and a pretty dull way to ring in the millenium.  By so doing, I made sure that my employees could go out and drink and carouse.  I guess that was my social contribution.

I was celebrating with a bunch of friends and I got massively drunk. My GF and mother of my first daughter just left me two months before that.

I was pretty sure nothing would happen but I pulled out a little extra cash should the banks need an extra week or two in order to track down a bug. Other than that, I did exactly what I normally did on December 31. I was at a trap shoot in the motorhome vending with my roommate and shooting competition. Pretty much everything I had with me was old school other than my laptop and my cell phone. I wasn't worried about either of them failing.

Other than that, it was cold and we were exhausted so we turned in early and slept through the new year.

The new millennium started in 2001! This is because there was no year zero. (Just as the decade of the 70s started in 1971 to 1980).

I don't remember exactly what I was doing. Lived with a girl named Ann Marie back then. She was six feet tall. lol.

Went to a bar where they played a certain song by Prince just before midnight and did just what the song lyrics said, so I don't remember too much else.

I had just gotten stationed at Fort Stewart and went up to Savannah, Georgia with a friend from basic training to go party and watch the world burn down.

The night ended awkwardly at this "really great party" that ended up just being about 15 college kids whacked out of their minds on ecstasy rubbing on everything including us, who were not on ecstasy.  At about 1AM we decided that if anything really neat was going to happen in the apocalyptic sense it would have done so by then so we drove back home.

My entire Family flew to Australia to have 2000 with me and my wife...we had a party and fireworks and I don't actually remember much about it but I did end up in hospital with an attack of Pancreatitis. It was my last year as a drunk...8 months later I was in hospital fighting for my life. I had a computer business and really didn't think much if anything would happen as most people with any sense took some simple precautions.

I was recording the news all day since my mom wanted me to document how the celebrations were all across the world. It was also the first time I had drank a whole can of beer myself and I dropped a drawer on my foot. Quite uneventful really.

I was working in software support, so I knew the real problem wouldn't begin for another year. Just the same I spent the night at home with the family watching bad sitcoms.

I was working the evening shift at a VA Hospital. Nothing happened to the hospital computer program. Some off line programs that only used 2 digits for the year, did get a little confused. The programs placed 00 before 99. Really inconsequential.

I was quitting my job, so I was at the dentist on the last day of my dental coverage to have a crown installed.  My resignation on 31 Dec 1999 caused some consternation among my co-workers, since I was the guy responsible for verifying that all our software was ready for "Y2K".  I had to assure tham that I hadn't bought a plane ticket to Rio de Janeiro, and that the software really was fine.

A year later, I was back working for them as a consultant.  We had more Y2K problems in 2001 than we did in 2000.  The date 00/01/02 is unambiguous: the 00 can only be the year, so the format has to be yy/mm/dd, since yy/dd/mm is never used anywhere in the world.  However, 03/02/01 could be 3rd Feb 2001 (European format), 2nd Mar 2001 (American format), or 1st Feb 2003 (International format).  We got bitten by that one.

I was just informed by my darling wife that I have a terrible memory and ought to be ashamed. I have reviewed the pertinent facts and found indeed, that I am mistaken. I apologize to any who were adversely affected by my errors.

The truth is we rented "Trekkies" and then went to see "Galaxy Quest" in the theater that afternoon. I cannot recall having laughed so hard at a pair of movies, when one so clearly represented the other. (or misrepresented?)(no)

I was not real concerned as long as there was not a mass panic and withdrawal from bank accounts and investments.

The main issue was a database problem where the transaction year was stored as a 2 digit number instead of a 4 digit number.  All new dates would be stored with years of "20xx" thus any un-converted records with 2 digit years "xx" could be interpreted as years "19xx".

Once any overlooked computer programs (and data records) were revised to properly recognize the dates there would not be a problem as date calculations use the "Julian Date" format which begins with January 1, 1900 and runs consecutively (12/31/1999 = day 36525 : 1/1/2000 = day 36526).

Thus, there would be plenty of time to correct any problems.  I stayed home.

I deleted my last message because I'm guessing it violated TOS. If this still isn't acceptable, someone please just delete it.

Anyway, I ingested something that is now only legal for medical purposes in my state, and had a panic attack. After the turn, I had my first kiss.

I dressed up as a prophet of doom in a long white winding sheet and a sandwich board that said "REPENT" in huge letters.  Then I grabbed an hour glass and a tall stick for a staff, and went to a party.  People thought I was funny for approximately .002 seconds.

To this day I don't have the ability to sit down, since there's nothing there to sit on. LOL ;)

I was on a chatroom with several other people, but it was mostly quiet. We were awaiting the time when gravity would stop working and earth would've gotten sent into interstellar space and everything was going to die. Once new years hit I typed "anyone still here?"... And everyone else said something similar too. We all ignored each other for a solid 5 minutes, it was hilarious. :D I also walked out of my room and jumped and mom looked at me funny... I told her I was wanting to see if gravity still existed, and threw a paper airplane to see if Newtonian physics also stopped. She rolled her eyes, then I went back into my room and continued 'chatting'.

Several people in my family spent a ton of money for the "end of the world" to occur. It was so bad that the local hardware stores (Ace, Home Depot, Lowes, etc) had a huge amount of returned generators in the next few days.

The only Y2K thing I encountered. The power company's automated system sent out bills for "past due" bills dated 19100. It wasn't caught until the morning so only a quarter of the customers received a bill. We got one, and we should have kept and framed it.

I had an old no-name computer with a 30MB HD, 25MHz running windows 3.1 and the date on it was fine.
My old crap Casio watch had the correct time/date too.

You want the real Y2K? 03:14:08 UTC on 19 January 2038. At that point time will "roll back" on computers and start over. The way to fix it is to upgrade hardware & software. Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_2038_problem) has a good article on it. Good thing computers in the last 15 years hardware side are fine and software is getting pushed to 64bit. 64 bit computing should make us good until December 4, 292277026596. So were good for the next 292,277,025 millennia.

However my favorite "end of the world" prediction was 1998. The "year of the beast". In 1998 there were 3 Friday the 13ths that year. 1998 divided by 3 is 666.  >:-)

Fri, Feb 13, 1998
Fri, Mar 13, 1998

I remember the year of the beast. The extremist christians in my area were keeping their children home a lot, spending all their free time in their churches and condemning anyone who wasn't on a street corner with a bible in their hand yelling at pedestrians and cars that went by. It was hilarious.

I've never been one to make a big deal of New Year's Eve but changing from 1999 to 2000, I felt, deserved a little more of a celebration that watching on TV as the ball dropped in Times Square. Our town had a small celebration at the fire headquarters. It was nice to be with other folks but not be part of the massive crowds in NYC.

I was 12! I stayed up til midnight with my family, watching celebrations happen all over the world on the TV. We also put together a time capsule as a family, which we'll open in 2030.

I remember shortly after midnight going on the internet (it was dial-up!) and seeing if any of my favorite websites were down due to y2k issues. A few of them were! Mostly nothing happened though.

I had just finished with PostGrad school ... in Amsterdam/Netherlands ...
I was hanging out in San Francisco ...
waiting for the Dutch bank (in Amsterdam)
to acquire my Dutch work permit ...
so I could begin working (legally) in Amsterdam ...

My PostGrad specialization was InternationalFinance ...
The European professors (especially in MathematicalSciences)
all felt that the 1990s' US StockMarket "RagingBull"
was a "Bubble that would BURST"

I (vividly) remember going down to a local InternetCafé
& restructuring my investment portfolio on 31Dec1999 ~
primarily by selling almost everything I had had invested in the US StockMarket ...
(The US StockMarket then proceeded to crash in early 2000 ...
right before I was flown back to Amsterdam ...
to start working for the Dutch bank ...
)

I spent that NewYear'sEve @ a SF BobbyWeir concert ...
and I wore a (custom-made) GratefulDead Europe '72 top ...

I was a 10 year old child living with my parents in Sweden. My parents had a very big party that newyears eve.
