Title: New surgical procedure performed by Drs. Bowers and Ting

Hi,
I learned from a woman, who is having surgery tomorrow, that Drs. Bowers and Jess Ting will use a small part of the woman's abdomen to give her vagina extra depth and the ability to self lubricate. The woman said that the proceedure has only been successful once before. She said that the proceedure isn't a sigmoid colon vaginoplasty. Has anyone heard of surgeons - Dr. Bowers in particular - using the abdomen to increase vaginal depth and to give the patient the ability to self lubricate?

Dr Maci Bowers is a big deal. There was a documentary on her and she was on the recent National Geographic gender special. She has been pushing the envelope so to speak on trans surgery. I heard her speak at the LGBT center in NYC. She and Mount Sinai Hospital are working to get all medical professionals in the hospital trans aware and to create a major surgical center there. Both MTF and FTM.

Do some searches. Lots of info and really well respected.
Oh and she is trans herself.

Hi,
Last October, Dr. Ting performed my vaginoplasty while Dr. Bowers was present in the operating room.
I am especially interested in the surgical proceedure that they will perform tomorrow.

Dr Heidi Wittenberg has performed vaginoplasties on natal women born without a vaginal cavity. I have no idea how her method compares to what Ting and Bowers are doing.

Given that other surgeons are seemingly able to obtain similar results without having to penetrate to abdominal cavity, I'm not seeing this as a huge plus..

Don't most surgeons do some form of self lubrication? I had Bowers back in 2011 and I self lubricate. She claims to keep the cowpers gland intact and that's what does the job.
Mind you, it's not enough to have sex comfortably without lube but it's something.

I sense that I self-lubricate in a limited way already.

I'm not sure how a part of the abdomen could grant self-lubrication ability anyway, since there's not much there that has that purpose (although "abdomen" is a pretty general term).
I also do self-lubricate enough for penetration - and it increases with penetration - so I'm reasonably content with that. I don't lubricate as much as some cis women, but then, neither does my wife.

Hi,
According to the woman, who had the proceedure, its' name is Peritoneum.

It sounds like you are referring to the Davydov procedure, which is used to correct vaginal agenesis in natal females.

Fwiw, my wife was born with vaginal agenesis. However, she decided against a surgical approach and instead "we" used a dilator.

Oh, yeah, that sounds like the Davydov method, which has been around since the 60s. I've assumed that the treatment for vaginal agenesis would be standard for trans women if there were no contraindications - it seems like the obvious solution - so there probably are reasons why most surgeons don't try (possibly including the fact that cis women with this issue may have *some* vaginal tissue and the reliance on the uterus to stabilize the vaginal canal).

Dr. Brassard uses the extra urethra as part of the lining of the labia minora and vaginal canal.
This is mucosal tissue, I don't know for certain that it helps with lubrication.
Many trans women who have had vaginoplasty report being self lubricating.
However at my age I would be post menopausal so dryness would be an issue anyway.
Using lube is generally recommended anyway whatever your age.
The peritoneum is the lining of the abdominal cavity and it produces a serum that is a lubricant.
Having a surgery on the abdomen is not something I would want done just for the sake of the hope that one can self lubricate.
I imagine some surgeons don't favour doing it because of how invasive it would be. The risk of infection being the primary concern.
I can understand transwomen who have sex with men might want this but otherwise why do it?

FWIW, I was recently a support person for a friend having GCS in Arizona with Dr Lay. She performed a full thickness abdominal skin grant to create sufficient vaginal depth for my friend and suggested that yes, many post op women have somewhat self lubricating neo-vaginas.

I have had surgery with Dr Suporn, and I self lubricate so much that most men I sleep with comment on it, because I end up soaking them. Both of the girls I'm still in contact with who went to him report the same. I am, however, looking into having corrective GCS with Dr Kaushik because I am SICK of dilation being part if my life even after 6 years.

I have self lubrication.. I've always had it.. never had sigmoid either. Then again nothing fits the normal pattern with me either. I went to Dr. Kunaporn. I also hadn't dilated in a very very long time, and maintained depth & length.
Don't be like me though :) Do what you're supposed to do.
