Hi people is anyone from the UK just wondered how I go about getting HRT over here, I keeping thinking I,m really too old (45) to do anything now & I just have to live a miserable life as I am I thought coming out to my life would make things easier but I,m just struggling keep thinking about taking my own life it would be so mush easier I just what to be the real me please help I,m so new to all this starting a new life thing any tips. Sweetheart don't despair I am just starting my journey and was 62 last Saturday, if you search the posts on here you will find info on UK but the first think is go to your GP and get registered at a Gender Clinic. Depends where you are in the UK as to the waiting list, Nottingham wait for me is 2years for first appointment but GP has put me onto Northampton clinic , shorter waiting list hopefully . Trying to get HRT and may have to go private  . The UK girls that have better info will answer I am sure. don't despair , Hugs Davina  XX

  Hi Sara,

  I'm Jeanette and I am 64. I started HRT and began my personal journey to become myself in Dec 2016. Yup, only 4 months ago. And I am not the oldest to have done so.  Your life is likely miserable in part due to you not taking the steps to become the person you have wanted to be for so long. If that is the problem you have then asking how to get on HRT in the UK is exactly the first step you needed to take in getting the help you need. I am not in the UK but many here are and will be able to help you with what you need to do next. I would thin contacting a gender therapist would be high on that list though .
  Now you just get those morbid self defeating thoughts right out of your head and get to work on doing what you need to do to feel better about yourself. Askin for help like you did is a very good start.

Didn't mean to depress you , there is Quicker ways but it takes £££££s , still pre every thing myself and finding it hard going as the wife threw me out and only just have enough ££s to live a month at a time. Good side is I am in my own place so can be ME every night and that helps the dystopia .

I'm 57 in a few weeks and have only just started the process of transitioning. So you're definitely not too late :)
I first came out to my GP who then referred me for a psyche evaluation and then on to a gender clinic.

Be prepared for a fairly long wait if you take the NHS rout. The sooner you start the process of referral the better. It's all good though, there are plenty of things to be working on while you wait.

I found by just making the first pro-active steps helped my mood greatly. I also started psychotherapy (non gender specific) which has helped a lot just having someone to talk to. This community has also been awesome!

So welcome Sara:) Sorry I can't be too specific as I've only just recently started the transition process myself. I wish you well with your journey.

You can either go the NHS route by asking your GP for a referral to a gender clinic (2-3 years minimum wait now for HRT, depending on how busy your local GIC is, I initially waited 10 months just for an appointment there and another 10 after seeing the GIC's psychiatrist and specialist doctor for the HRT) or go through the private route and cut that time down a bit.

I am sure more UK people can fill you in in the situation over there.

Don't think you are too old.  I was 61 when I started this adventure, and I am 62 now.  I am three months on HRT and loving it.  I just came out to my community and started living full-time as myself on Thursday.

Wow up to 2-3 years for an appointment I think I will take my own life before that ( sorry for being so morbid ) but I'm on a knife's edge I have no money to speak off.

I am not from the UK but the term that is used to get HRT privately is bridging. You might also be able to get your private doctor to prescribe it as some work with the health system but it varies from doctor to doctor if they are willing to go this far. The important thing is not to give up. It took me a bit for 4 years to find a treatment program and a total of about 8 to fully transition. I am pretty sure that you will not have that much difficulty as long as you keep looking for a solution.
