Oregon is working on possibly adding a Non Binary option for gender on driver licenses.

I do love my state and our current govenor

I love how a state can understand nonbinary....but here on a transgender site.... not so much....

I totally understand non binary trans people, on the other hand as a trans woman who feels 100% female, knowing how already very confusing trans issues are for people out there, my fear is that it'll add more confusion and also that people will eventually see trans people as a third gender.

I was really surprised that I could not find a lot of resources for LGBTQ+ here in the Portland area.

What the non-binary really did for licenses in Oregon is to let the M, F, or X be a self selected
field on the form.  Thus each individual can select.   This is a new process here and it will be
interesting to watch it play though.   

It is, but why again is gender even on a drivers license?

Someone a long time ago decided to put it on there for whatever reason, but if it were totally removed, things would be even better, for both those that are non-binary and those that are mid-transition. What exactly does gender have to do with operation of a motor vehicle?

I believe it is there for ID purposes.

This sounds so much better than going to the MVD nearly a dozen times trying to change gender markers and half the time either coming out in tears or nearly being arrested.

I share the fear of states labeling anyone trans as X and if someone had tried to do that to me I'd have to hold myself back from scalping them alive, but if it STAYS self-selected that's a massive improvement.

...though I do hope that X gets used only by the very small minority who truly identify as non-binary, because where I am it's basically being used as more of a catch-all label than it ought to.

I would say that clearing up this matter is the responsibility of those who have not yet become educated on these nuances. It is not the responsibility of non-binary individuals to present a oversimplified narrative, at the cost of their own well-being. We cannot allow an incomplete understanding to subjugate truth; rather, we must collectively strive to update the cultural mind-set accordingly.
