Title: Aches & pains
Post by: Rambler on May 17, 2017, 08:40:09 AM
I'm two days away from my 1 month mark on HRT and over the last couple days, moreso today especially, I've been experiencing a lot of dull aches all over my body. Pecs, upper arms and hips are the most noticable, but the hips are the worst. I'm noticing it all over to some extent and it isn't any localized pain or swelling that would make me worried about a clot. The best I can describe it is that it feel reminiscent of growing pains I used to get when I was a kid. Has anyone else experienced this and what is it? I know I'm not feeling any taller! I know muscle atrophy and even potential changes in tendons & ligaments are potential effects, but could they really be starting this early?

Are you on spiro?  It is a Potassium-sparing diuretic, which can cause muscle aches and cramping.

I am, yes. That could definitely describe some of what I'm experiencing.

I would suspect spiro above anything else, personally.  I was on it for years before srs and I am a runner.  I would have daily muscle aches and cramping sessions from it.  After srs and ditching spiro I have not had ANY.  Talk your your prescriber about mitigating actions you can take via dietary intake. ;)

Are you staying hydrated? My doctor is like a nagging wife when it comes to the water.

Hugs, Devlyn

I drink a ton of water, prior to starting HRT I was getting about 2 quarts a day (my giant nalgene bottle makes tracking my water intake super easy) which was right where I should be according to my weight. I drink about double that now on any given day. Hell, it's not even noon yet by me and I've already met my old quota!

I've had issues with muscle cramping, especially in my calves, for years, sometimes I would even wake up in the middle of the night with my calf so tight & painful that my toes were stuck pointing downwards. Like I said, this feels far more reminiscent of growing pains. But the Spiro is definitely the best a sweet as to what is causing it.

What is your salt intake like?

I too am on Spiro. I crave salty foods like crazy.
If I don't get enough salt I start feeling very crappy.

I bet with the amount of water you are drinking you'll need to step up your salt intake for electrolytes.

I could probably use more salt regularly. I have been craving the stuff like crazy lately. I had some frozen pretzels stored away in the freezer and I made short work of the box over the last two weeks. I've even been eating the left over salt, I'm sure I just look gross doing it. Totally worth it, though.

There's a recent discussion thread in this forum, I think, with suggestions for salt cravings. I found some worthy suggestions. My favorite is kosher pickle brine. :)

All the best,
