Title: Transwoman with Tattoos
Post by: VickyJones89 on May 31, 2017, 03:22:24 PM
So this discussion happened between my wife and I and got me thinking about it. As I served in the USMC, I had gotten a lot of what I would call "aggressive/manly tattoos to appear masculine which obviously isn't the case :) anyways, she suggested I should look into getting them removed which I feel would be impossible since my entire back is covered and most of both arms so it would be thousands of dollars. I also can not wear long sleeves all summer round! Lol so any thoughts and opinions on being a beautiful transwoman with constant reminders of a past male life permanently on your skin??

Honesty? Roll with it. Your tattoos are part of you.
What you -could- do, though, is go back in and do some feminine accents in some areas if it suits you--sort of a melding of the past and present--to break it up a bit if you really wanted. A good tattoo artist would definitely be able to do that and make it look seamless.
Either way, who doesn't love a bad*** military chick?

Honestly? Why cover them up or have them removed? Maybe you could check around for the right artist and get them femininely "adapted" to your newly lovely back! I'm sure that there's lots of artwork in tatworld that would be Hard Corp, but in a prettier way.Good luck!

I wouldn't even worry about your tattoos. I have seen many women with tattoos out and about and sporting them proudly.  Back when my grandmother and even to an extent my mom were young tattoos were considered unfeminine by lots of people. But now that is so not true. Lots of my friends have tattoos and they rock them.

Yeah, coverup or feminize. I had always wanted to get a certain couple of tats. Glad I waited though. One would have been kinda manly. Instead I'm getting this on my upper thigh this Fri. It will be color with different clothes but it will help offset a scar.

My wife and I both are heavily tattooed. The tattoo artist I go to, which happens to be a woman, is completely covered. Full sleeves, legs done, torso both back and front, the list goes on. So who's to say what is feminine or what is masculine? Tattoos fall in the area of self expression. It's your body and you should decorate it however you see fit. If someone doesn't like it, screw 'em. It's not like you're holding them down and forcing a tattoo on them. Don't let others tell what you should or shouldn't do with your own body.

Definitely look into coverup/modification if possible.  A good artist can do amazing things.

I can say from experience that removal sucks.  I'm getting one burned off currently for reasons not unlike your own.  Even though it's only about a business card worth of ink area it is costing close to $2000.  On top of that when the tech is really getting into the outlining it makes laser hair removal feel downright nice.

Ouch that sucks. I have really "manly" tattoos so yeah I like the idea of adding some flare to it to make it more neutral or more girly :) and yeah I can only imagine. I love getting tats. The pain and rush of adrenaline gets me going :) electrolysis will be a walk in the park when I get to that point/money lol

I'm big on tattoos I can look at tattoo art for hours on instagram and imo a "masculine " tattoo on a female is no longer masculine.  If you where proud of your tattoo before be proud of it now. Good tattoo art is just good art no matter who it's on. I myself am proud of all my tattoos and wouldn't dream of covering them up or removing them it's apart of who I am.

Thanks Kristin! Yeah one of my back tattoos which covers up majority of my back is Disturbed's Indestructible album cover (the demon in flames) except mine is wearing camo pants from being in the military. Also I felt at the time it's the power that's in me that can be waken when provoked hehehe dark side to this girl sometimes ;)

Disturbed really has had some awesome album art over the years (and awesome live shows!), but yeah that tat is pretty dudely sounding.  But who knows what the right artist could do with it?  Definitely worth a consult.

It definitely gives an idea as to the size of it, that's a whole lot of ink.

You could also upload it to imgur.com and link it if you want a bigger pic.

I would be interested in knowing how to post a pic. But that album cover does make a good tattoo. And that's a nice pic

I had a couple tattoos from my time as a Navy Corpsman.  I got them covered up with forals. :)  I just could not keep on with the man tats on my body; plus, the feminine tattoos are really flattering, IMHO. :)

Ya I am agreeing with most on this thread. Rock the tats and find a great tattoo artist and have them feminized a little. I love tats on women and I really don't think if they were a little more masculine than feminine, it would matter all that much to me.

Here is one of mine:

I think it looks better in person than in that picture, too. lol  My tattoo artist took the pictures and made that collage.

I have a similar issue.  I have a very masculine Harley tattoo on one upper arm and a train scene on the other.  Both black and gray, neither feminine in any way.  I also have one that's more neutral on my left chest which I'm waiting to see how it looks after my breasts start to develop and another more neutral one on my back right shoulder.

Ultimately, I'm not planning to remove them, I'm just going to own them for what they are.  None of them represents anything that is less a part of my life after transition.  I've thought about maybe having an artist look at ways to make them more feminine, but ultimately I'm not too worried. They're just another part of who I am.
