Hi
I'm having sigmoid colon srs in few months and I want to know what are the possible risks if I don't dilate after the surgery or dilate for one month only
In the other srs the risk is losing depth so what is the risk with sigmoid colon
I'm asking for education and curiosity

Hey,
I can only speak from experience and I have only gone about 1.5-2 weeks in between dilation mainly due to being very busy or just being too lazy lol. I didn't experience any loss of depth or anything bad just that it will take a little longer to fully insert the dilator. I have now been dilating properly and haven't noticed any issues. It becomes easier to dilate if you stick to a schedule especially in the first few months. I was told that loss of depth wouldn't be an issue and it hasn't however i stick to my schedule so that when i do have sex with my husband it will be more comfortable than what it would be if I didn't dilate at all or very little. The Dr will be better able to explain the risks and possible complications if any due to not dilating but it is generally accepted that with sigmoid colon technique dilation is less important but i don't believe that and am sticking to my schedule.
Kind regards,
B

If you stopped dilating and sex, and your vaginal canal closed, is there any risk to having the colon not being able to discharge its fluids? I ask because I had colon surgery 2 weeks ago and didn't think of this situation until now.

Hello vivicompany, welcome to Susan's!
I had GCS but I am not very familar with the sigmoid colon method - I am unable to answer your question. Your surgeon can answer this question, if you find out it would be great to know here. Since you are 2 weeks post-op I assume you are in regular contact with your surgeon's office.
Since this was your first post I'll add information to help with navigation and site guidelines for Susan's Place.
When you get a chance, it would be great if you introduce yourself in the Introductions Forum (https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php/board,8.0.html).
Best wishes on your continued recovery from surgery, and all the new opportunities you now have.
