Hi,
I had GCS yesterday with Suporn. They had initially put me on morphine, but I started having reactions to that after a while. Instead they gave me to two Tylenol pills, which obviously did nothing. This is by far the worse pain I've ever experienced, and I already have a low pain threshold. Is anyone aware of any alternatives I can ask for?

Have you tried oxycodone or dilaudid? Even tramadol is better than tylenol.

Hi Jill,
"Having reactions" is not a very specific complaint. What is the problem? Nausea? Lack of pain relief? If you can't tolerate morphine because it makes you nauseous, then all strong opioids like oxycodone or oxymorphone (Dilaudid) are likely to cause similar reactions. Tramadol is a little different in its mode of action, as it is a weak mu-agonist, but also increases dopamine turnover.
You might inquire if there is an acupuncture anesthetist available. It is possible to get fairly profound anesthesia, enough to do surgeries with it.
With kindness,
Terri

The morphine was making me itchy all over. I also got a fever, but I don't know if it's related.

Itchy skin is a classic response to heroin and other strong opioids. I

EDIT: I looked this up, and apparently the itching is not histamine-induced ( see https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3788225/). Mixed mu/kappa-agonists like pentazocine seem to help, though. Best course of action is just ask your nurse or the doctor to change you meds, or try the acupuncture.

From what I've heard of Suporn they do have a number of other strong painkillers available and you need to make sure they try them. There's some in that suporn pdf, but I'm believe there's others as well.

"Itchy all over" and "a fever" could also be an allergic reaction. Morphine, being a natural product derived from opium could have impurities causing the allergic reaction. You may be able to tolerate the semi-synthetic or completely synthetic opium analogs. You doctor should know this, since it is such a common problem.
