Title: GCS Surgery Centre coming to Ontario
Post by: Sofie L on June 26, 2017, 11:40:04 PM
I don't know if anyone else caught this, but the Ontario provincial government announced last week that they are planning to begin offering GCS surgeries in-province beginning in 2018. There was very little other info provided in the news release, other than Women's College Hospital in Toronto will be the likely site.

This is huge news for us in Canada, where we presently have only the one Canadian clinic, in Montréal, with a huge surgery backlog across the country. The provincial Liberal government has really taken big steps to removing the hindrances to receiving trans health care in the province. I only hope that the new centre opens before the next provincial election!

Yes, it was posted here  last week.  I mentioned it was only a half hour drive for me, so very convenient.

Well, Montreal to Toronto would be quite a commute for him.  Also, I seem to recall reading that there is more than one doctor at the Montreal clinic.

it is a good start but they should have at least one in every province.

The problem is population density.  Ontario and Quebec are the most populous provinces.  Some of the provinces have a smaller population than my city  For example, Prince Edward Island has a population of less than 150,000.  Is that large enough to properly support a clinic?  My city alone, has a population of about 722,000 and Toronto, 2.73 million and there are several other cities & towns in the vicinity.  So, that's quite a population difference between Ontario and PEI.

I understand that, I meant that they as in the government should never have just had one clinic for a whole country there should have been at least 5 doctors through out canada put them in the highest density area there would not have been this back log and with the fire that happened last year at the montreal clinic set things even more behind

It should be noted that the Government has NO clinics for GCS, Dr Brassard is private...

One thing I recently found out about that Women's College Hospital, where the clinic will be located, is that it's outpatient only.  So, I guess it will be necessary to stay at one of the other hospitals in the vicinity.  In that area of Toronto, there are 4 major hospitals that are linked by tunnels.  One of them is the Hospital for Sick Children, where I suppose younger trans would go.  There are also Toronto General and Mount Sinai.
