Title: Divided doses of spironolactone

Hi everyone. I'm on a large dose of spiro. I take it all at once in the morning. I take the whole dose at once so I don't forget to take it all. Is there any reason to start doing it in divided doses? Does it work better that way?

As far as blood pressure goes, the difference AFAIK, according to some studies, is either none or slightly better with twice daily. Spiro's metabolites have a short half-life, about 13-17 hours so usually, when this is so, doctors/pharmacists recommend twice daily dosing. Check with your own doctor/pharmacist and see what they say. :)

One thing to remember, if you take it shortly before bed time, you might be up all night peeing depending how it affects you. Taking it well before bed time will allow you a more restful sleep.

I know! I forgot to take it one day so I took it at like 9pm. What a long night of getting up to pee. It was awful.

You need to find what works for you. My dose was split even though the doctor's original intention was together, but he agreed with my doing it. Fact is you need to find what works for you and work with your doctor on that. Hugs

For blood pressure use once a day is good for most but our doses can be much much higher and dividing into two times a day seems to be the norm.

My doctor suggested splitting the dose right from the beginning and I used to have problems remembering if and when I took my doses. A weekly AM/PM pill box fixed the remembering problem and getting up too often during the night fixed the taking them too late in the evening.

I'm taking my whole dosage right after lunch, are there really any proven advantages of doing a split dose?

My dose was split into 3 times. Breakfast, Lunch, and Supper. I don't know why she did that. I don't know if it helps or not.

I'm not so good at the remembering side of things and have a significant number of other tablets that I have to take in the mornings as well, so I asked if I could just take all of mine together and my endo said he had no problem with that. At least it gets everything done at once that way

The only difference between taking it once or multiple times is I've read side effects can be more severe if you take it all at once, but that's purely anecdotal.

I remember learning the half-life of spiro is 24 hours so there is nothing wrong with taking it only once a day.
I am pretty sure it is split more for the reasoning of side effects. It can be rough for some people especially if you dont eat with it so splitting it would make it more manageable. It depends what you can handle.
My doctor split mine but i still get a little ug afterwards

For what it is worth I just Googled half life of Spironolactone and a response was
"Time to peak plasma concentration is approximately one hour. Distribution – Although the plasma half life of spironolactone itself is short (1.3 hours) the half lives of the active metabolites are longer (ranging from 2.8 to 11.2 hours). Spironolactone is estimated to be 90% protein bound".
The source was www.medicines.org.UK..........
If this is true, my take is that splitting the dose makes sense.

As long as you can tolerate the large dose at once (side effects), there shouldn't be an issue when taking it all at once. I did the same and my testosterone level is still very well controlled.
