Title: finally got a GP appointment
Post by: gwencook on July 14, 2017, 10:11:43 AM
hi all,
so ive finally got an appointment with my GP to get the help i need. I'll admit im worried what they may say but nonetheless im still looking forward to it. Just need an excuse to get out the house for a bit lol.
For those in the UK i was wondering about their first time coming out to the GP. Did they refer you to a GIC on the same day or did they delay it to try other medications first (something im worried about). Also what was the reaction from the GP like? To be honest any info on what to expect would be very much appreciated.
Love you all, x

Well done Gwen on making that step. I live in Ireland I went to the doctor today about something else but I chickened out when I had the opportunity to ask about transition...but as you I would love to know more about what the procedure is.

Thank you :) and its not chickening out its just nerves get the best of us at times. I haven't been to doctors in about 7years to avoid it lol

I am not from the UK but I just went to my GP today. I really thought I was going to let my nerves get the best of me and chicken out. Anyway, after going through the physical and everything I said "there is something else I need to discuss....." My last chance to chicken out. She says "Ok, what is it?" After 5-6 seconds of silence, I tell her that I have GD and I want to start HRT. Had a good conversation after that and am glad that I did.

Good Luck and I hope your conversation turns out as positive as mine did!

You need to tell your GP and then they will refer you to a GIC, trouble is at least a 2 year wait for first appointment (still have 18months to go). Your GP will not prescribe any drugs, if they do not want to refer or try to give you something to "calm" you then find another GP. If you can afford it then go private to start HRT. search around on here there is more information in posts

Well done Jenna that so brilliant to hear sweetie *hugs* so proud of you :D and yeah I hope it is straightforward conversation with am as I really can't change my doctors as my dad in unaware I'm going about my GD and if I move doctors its going to end up brining it all out. Heck, I need to come up with an excuse as to why I'm going out early in the morning as my every move is monitored.
So what actually happens with referal to GIC is it a case of they just put you down for a GIC or do you have to inform them of which you want to go to?

Not in the UK but I know people there and have read a fair number of posts on it. I'd recommend you do a lot of research into this as it sounds like it takes a very long time to get anywhere and there will be endless delays and screw-ups. If you have the money to go private you can shortcut a lot of problems.

By research I mean with google, not just asking questions here.
