I've had high cholesterol and it didn't stop me from getting HRT.
HRT actually helped me get it back to normal. Stress from not having HRT is extremely unhealthy.
There is also a strong genetic component and some thin people have high cholesterol.
I'm in Australia though, so I've not idea what your doctors are like.

Hi LOLAlola
I'm Laurie, MtF Like AnonyMs said your cholesterol should not be an issue with your HRT meds. I was just started again of cholesterol medication again a months or so ago by my doctor. Your endo or doctor may do the same but it should not affect your HRT.
Besides being Laurie I a a self appointed unofficial greeter for Susan's Place. As such I would like to invite you over to the "Introductions" forum to compose a post that tells us a little more about you so that we can get to know you better.
Welcome To Susan's Place ((Hug))

Recent studies and research have deemed cholesterol to be a poor predictor of cardiovascular risk. Furthermore, some studies have found no association between cholesterol levels and cardiovascular risk and an association does not necessarily imply cause and effect as any good researcher/scientist should know. HDL and triglycerides were found to be better predictors and are used as criteria for the metabolic syndrome, in addition to glucose levels, blood pressure and body fat around the waist. If HDL is normal-high as it should be with oral estrogen and if triglycerides are low-normal (they can increase on oral E or on high doses of non-oral E), then you are fine. When I reduced my carbs significantly, my triglycerides went way down and my HDL went way up due to increasing my consumption of fats, especially saturated (i.e. coconut oil, animal fats). My cholesterol also went up but the ratio of cholesterol to HDL remained very good.
As far as LDL goes, recent studies have also found that the size of the particles matters more. Small particles are more atherogenic. VLDL being high is also not good, it seems. Oral estrogen tends to reduce LDL and, I think, VLDL.
But again, these are all based on associations sooo...
Don't worry, you should be fine. :) Hopefully, you will have a competent doctor who is up-to-date with the research.
p.s.: I am NOT a doctor.

Hi Lola,
Welcome to the site.
Glad you are feeling better. Hope the answers helped. I am MTF and taking Spiro and estradiol patches. My triglycerides bumped when I first started HRT but then evened out over time. Just kept an eye on them.

Welcome to Susan's Place. Controlling cholesterol with diet is a good place to start. Stay away from processed (hydrogenated) fats, reduce the amount to red meat and getting your weight under control should help your LDL numbers. There are medications that can help if your LDL is excessively high but you are better off not taking it if it can be avoided.
There is one other possibility and that is sometimes lab tests are wrong. If your past tests have been good and one bad result happens on your test, it's best to wait for a retest to make sure it wasn't a lab test. I had a bad lab test once and the doctor was wise enough to wait for the retest. The second test showed my numbers were back where they should be and so has every test after that.

Quote from: Dena on August 09, 2017, 04:16:59 PMreduce the amount to red meat
I eat plenty of red meat and I remain low risk. The evidence against red meat is quite poor and mostly, if not entirely based on associations (epidemiological and cohort studies). MY LDL is normal and as I explained above, it's not one of the criteria used for metabolic syndrome. It's excessively more complicated than just LDL.

One bad test usually does not cause a lot of concern. Consistently testing at a high level might lead your doctor to prescribe medication I take both Lipitor and Crestor. I thought my heart disease would exclude me. Luckily it did not. One year on HRT and I can say I have not felt better in a long, long time. Now to try to explain. I have Congestive Heart Failure, Cardio Myopathy, aortic valve disease, ventricular arrhythmia, pacemaker therapy, and diabetes. Yet here I am a year later. Doing just fine. Good luck.
