My brother and boyfriend are both gym rats and they have both shaved their legs and chests at times. They say it's to show definition. I have no idea what they are talking about.

These days, so many men shave their bodies I don't think anyone will actually notice or be bothered. I've been shaving my legs for years whilst presenting male and never had a comment
Like the others said you can always say you have taken up a sport or if you're a bit older just say the hair got patchy and so you shaved it all off to make it look neater

My neighbor just asked if I picked up swimming again (I used to be in the school swim team). Serious swimmers or cyclists are all shaved.
But then - he was the only one to notice anyway :-)

Hi Lizabelle,
You could try the truth, You do not like body hair. It's your body and you choices as to what you do with it.
These days it isn't that big of a deal. Just do it and don't worry what others think.
Hugs,
Laurie

I shave my legs but don't usually expose them. However, about 6 or 7 months ago, I showed up at work with my freshly shaved previously VERY hairy arms and nobody said anything. A few looks, but that's it... People don't really care. They may find it different at first, but then they get used. Excuse? "Because I wanted!" [emoji4]

You could say you are a cyclist or swimmer, or you could go for the truth, you shave for aesthetical reasons. You don't like your body hair, and that's fine. Worst case scenario, people will think you are gay.

I think from memory I just got the whole lot "sugared" a few years ago and have never looked back. I got the weed Wacker out today and gave the legs a bit of a trim up....I don't ever think anyone has ever asked me why I have shaved legs and arms...They did in the late 70's when I played soccer and I think I said then it was a joke played on me when I was Drunk...don't think anyone believed me...I didn't dare let on why they were shaved

I started shaving my legs when I was 19, I don't think anyone ever asked me about it.
When I first started shaving, It was winter, so it was hidden by winter clothes.. When it warmed up, I was very aware my legs were bare.. and I tried to hide it, but then I got too hot.. so I wore shorts.. I got use to it and I stopped caring and the rest of the world also did not care.

One thing to add to all the great advice is that I understand the fear in your head about this - I remember vividly the first time after I had my first whole body wax and went to a bbq (very much in male mode) with my uni friends. Super worried about people and what happened ....
You guessed it, nothing at all. Not only did no-one mention it but I'm not even convinced anyone noticed.
I think if I've learned anything during this transition is that people are far more oblivious than you think they are and actually, if you think about it, it makes sense. Thinking about your last commute whenever that was, how many people do you remember? I would estimate, close to zero.
If you really want an excuse, cycling or swimming but you won't need it.

Unless you are serious cyclist, swimmer or bodybuilder, those excuses only show that you are insecure about it... If your friends never saw you going to gym and now you lied to them about it, would they just accept your excuse or laugh it out?

Btw, shaving legs is a very annoying chore. You'd need to do it every other day or have stubble. I recommend waxing or epilator. More painful (but not intolerably), yet you can do it once every two weeks

This is my experience as well, no one really cares.
The only questions I've ever had were from family and close friends, which I just say "because I wanted to" and that's usually the end of that. I did take notice at the gym that some of the men shaved their legs, mostly guys that hang out in the weights.
I am finding that on body changes that are visible, if you just own it- other people will not care or question. When you get self conscious is when people poke, seems weird but confidence really makes a big difference in how people perceive and interact with you.

1st time, summer of '73, literally skinned both shins, hair never grew back. No one cared.
2nd time, summer of '86, GF claimed my skin was softer than hers. Oh well!
3rd time, summer of '13, "are you shaving?" from a peer, but she didn't blink.
Apparently hating leg hair is okay in some circles.

I was asked two times if I shaved my legs; once by my daughter and the other by a woman in a running group I was with. I just said that the hair just doesn't grow there anymore. That was mostly true since it is so light and fine and grows so slow as to be virtually invisible and at that time I really hadn't shaved them for over five months.
That was after I had stopped DIY HRT and was in my final session of fighting this thing. Even after a couple of years the hair never came back.

I just shaved my legs two days ago. The first time ever, so you can imagine how difficult and timetaking it was. Anyway, besides the itching, I got no other "complications". No one has asked anything yet but I assume when I go outside I'm mostly wearing jeans pants since it is getting cold and rainy in here hahaha. But even if someone ever does come to ask me anything, I'll be honest: I just wanted to do that! :-)
And I did and I appreciated it, therefore, I'll most probably keep doing that, hahaha. Same for my nails, I got them red a week ago and I just told people that I did it because I wanted to and, incredibly, they were just okay with it.

I haven't shaved my legs since I got an epilator.
As far as what to say if anyone asks, just tell the truth: "I thought the hair looked bad, so I got rid of it".

Yes it is chore, but I actually don't mind doing it. I still shave with a razor and I also have to do it every other day.. I also shave my arms.. I hate stubble. My legs and arms must be silky smooth.
I do get them waxed from time to time.. when i treat myself to a day of beauty and pampering.. I like how long it lasts. I dont wax and home, as I just don't have the time in the morning.. I normally shave my legs in the shower

A little trick I used to do years ago. I would purchase Medium Dark self-tanning lotion and spread on my legs (also sometimes total body). This works great to cover any "evidence" of shaved legs. Anyone would have to look very close to notice any hairlessness on dark legs. I had to be careful, though. I am so light-skinned that going too dark would look unnatural. Julia, you are like me (well, somewhat) in that regard! ;)

I've been shaving my legs for about a month now. In the southern US shorts are pretty much mandatory most of the year, so I was pretty paranoid about it - for the first week or so. Absolutely nobody has said a word. I don't think they even notice. It's been long enough now that if I do get questioned, I'll just tell them I haven't been hairy down there for a long time. I get to define what "long time" means.
I do need to keep on top of it, though. Stubble would be a dead giveaway. I actually enjoy shaving in the shower, unless I'm in a big hurry. I can go every other day if I need to.
I tried an epilator just once. OUCH. I wasn't properly prepared, though. I understand the first couple of times it helps to take some ibuprofen an hour or so ahead of time, and the more you do it the less it hurts. I may give it another shot.

I know this isn't strictly on topic, but I have devised a workaround for those that are unable to shave for whatever reason, be it temporary or longer term.
The workaround involves matte finish dance tights - whether footless, stirrup or otherwise, in a colour closest to your skin tone, worn underneath your main legwear. In my experience it can work pretty well :

This is something I had wrestled with for ages. What if someone sees..what will they think and so on. Over the last month or so I've finally come to realize that nobody (with the exception of your other half) will care. My wife isn't bothered either as long as I'm happy on the leg hair front and simply shrugged and said okay when I said I'd like to always keep them smooth.

There are plenty of people who are cis that wax or shave because they like the way they look without the hair. It only means to people what you say to them (the few who care anyway).

I agree, nobody cares. After a while, people will get used to it if they're not. I also had laser hair removal, and not much grows and is the new normal.

I never made excuses, I find body hair revolting.
I'd been shaving my armpits and legs since hair first began, anyone who gave me static about it, I told em flat out where to go. In high school when it was joined with full on female dress, I told people off again; 'I borrowed this dress from your mother/sister after we had sex. She'll get it back. Mind your own damn business.'

Lots of excellent excuses: Because I want to. It's my damn body. I like my legs smooth. Leg hair bothers me. They are my legs, not yours, now step off. ;D

I just started shaving my legs and I'm worried people will notice. Are there any good excuses for shaving legs?

Here is another plausible exuse if you happen to live in certain areas.
Ticks. I am a chronic Lyme disease survivor and spent two years of my life in hell
So when I started shaving that was going to be my exuse. I could feel and see ticks better without hair.
But as most have said nobody but my wife ever noticed.
