Title: Is it ok to stop hormones all at once?
Post by: Charlie Nicki on August 27, 2017, 08:08:38 AM
I've been almost 3 months on T blockers and almost 2 months on estrogen. I'm thinking about stopping all at once, for the ones who've done this, how did it go? I haven't really felt any big changes in my mood, I kinda feel less anxious but I think that is mostly because I came out to people.

Personal opinion: you should be fine. I have been on them for about 20 months, and am doing this and it is wreaking HAVOC on my brain.

I did that twice.  Both times I was fine physically but the dysphoria came back worse than ever.

Have you discussed this with your therapist?

I'd just like to know what they said or suggested.

Thanks for your answers. It kinda makes me feel a bit better to know that people do this.

I did. He said I could be mixing the mourning of my lost relationship with my transition and to focus first on dealing with the grief and then decide what to do with my transition. The thing is that taking the pills is giving me major anxiety, so I feel I need to stop right now. I'm scared and I wanna get my life back, I wanna get myself back.

I was on Spiro for 3 months and estradiol valerate for about a month and a half.  I went through the worse PMS symptoms ever for about two weeks. (Didn't recognize it as such though.)

The real problem was my dysphoria, which manifests in anger and jealous rage came back so fast and so strong that I almost lost everything, job, family, even my life.  I had never been suicidal, until about 3 months after stopping.  With everything crashing down, a good friend stopped me.  I had mean, mode and opportunity one Saturday morning.  She literally talked me out of it.

Please PLEASE be careful.  Make sure you have someone keeping an eye on you who knows you well that you trust with your life.

I'm going out of the country in a month and will be in Australia for a month and a half, by myself. If I stop now it's very likely that I can know if there are any bad side effects in the next 20 days right? I am afraid to have some sort of crisis while in Australia by myself.

If you have not arranged reciprocal care then the major hospitals in Sydney are fully use to TG clients and should know how to deal with emergency care. The Gender Centre may also be able to assist.

I would very carefully explain everything to your therapist and proceed on their advice, maybe get them to give a referral to a Sydney specialist?

At three months of HRT I decided to stop. I was only able to be off them for about a week and I started taking them again. I felt bad, like in a bad mood and had lost the good feeling that taking the pills had given me. I started back on them and swore I would never quite again. It was 1 year of being on HRT on Aug. 22nd. Couldn't be happier and would not think of stopping

I stopped for 3 days and felt better. I was feeling positive and confident so I took them again for 2 days...and last night I felt sad again. Ugh. Is this normal? Are hormones NOT for me then? Seems like my body is telling me to stop.

I've been on & off hormones more times than I care to count over the decades. The worst that happened to me is just feeling worn down... but then I always feel worn down lol.   I can also feel/see my skin literally losing its natural luster as well.  Since I FINALLY have an insurance and method to pay for it I won't be off it again unless I have to for surgery or... if my natural production kicks up more.  Life is tricky, but we all have our unique approach to hormones.   I suspect its more apparent pre op than post going off of it.
