Title: Staying on Finasteride after starting HRT
Post by: Megan. on September 01, 2017, 01:00:06 PM
I've been using Finasteride for over 2 years now to help combat hairloss (although the 'side effects' were never a concern).
Two months ago I started HRT (E and GNRH blockers),  but I've kept on using the Finasteride as I'm a little paranoid about loosing the hair I managed to keep!
I know my T levels are now very low (not measured,  but my total loss of libido must be a big indicator). There will still be some T and therefore DHT in my system. Can I ask what others think about continuing with a DHT blocker if I'm also blocking T?
Thanks,  Megan.  X

Finasteride is part of my regiment prescribed by my doctor and i am on a moderately high dose of spiro too.

Tell your doctor, no need to hide it and they should know what you are taking

On a GnRh agonist, you are chemically castrated which means testes stop producing any male hormones. The only remaining androgens (and DHT, produced from peripheral conversion of weaker, precursor androgens) comes from the adrenal glands. Studies have shown that post-op, there remains 40% of DHT in tissues (i.e. prostate) despite a 95% reduction in T in the blood (serum). Those very sensitive to DHT may perhaps benefit from finasteride but IMHO, it is probably overkill and unnecessary. You need to discuss this with your doctor.

Thanks KayXo,  I wondered if you might respond to my query [emoji5].
I'll be seeing my GP in December for my first set of HRT blood levels,  so I'll raise it then,  but I'll stick with it for now,  as I've never had any noticeable negative side effects from it. X

The Fin is a private prescription from my GP,  so they are fully aware of what I'm taking. The problem is the lack of endocrinology knowledge amoung typical NHS GPs.
