Title: Irma hurricane check in thread ... U OK?

That storm was a bytch here in central Florida. We got hit very hard for 12 hours straight. Just got power and water back --- very lucky our local infrastructure is very strong and was able to get back on line this quick. Most are still off line, with no power and no open stores. Most everything has been closed -- no food, gas, etc. Been eating various canned foods. So, I'm back, my house survived but I have tons of clean up and repairs to do. Food, water, gas are still issues. Hope my fellow Florida peeps are ok. All my dresses survived. :)

I'm glad you're OK, and I hope anyone else down there is, too! I can't even imagine what that's like. We get a lot of tornadoes in Kansas, but I've been fortunate to have dodged them all these years.

Thank you sweetie! We may not hear from most in Florida for a few days, or more.
Just imagine a tornado lasting for 12 hours ... it's nuts. Most of Florida is without power, water, gas, food, etc. I hope we did not lose anybody from this community.

I too am glad you are okay and have your power back. You do have a lot of work ahead but you can do it.
I have something like a dozen friends in Florida and all have checked in and are okay except one. Stephanie (Steph 2.0)
She and her wife life near Inverness where the eye went over. So I'll worry until I hear from her.
Most of the friends I have there, live in Inverness (all one family) and I'm happy they made it though last I heard they don't have power.
Stephanie.... Where are you?

How long does it normally take to restore normality to services and stores after something like this?
I've got 3 good friends in FL, but all of them seem fine, the worst they got was a lawn full of palm tree bits and a power cut.

I am here in GA and the worst we had here was some down trees on cars and houses around but luckily nothing hit my house. Just lots of debris and tree limbs in the yard. We didn't lose power for more than a minute but I have relatives that are still without power.

St Thomas and the British Virgin islands, Bermuda will be months recovering, hospital facilities are out of commission and I don't think they have electricity or cell networks back up. To say nothing of Barbuda, Anguilla or st Martin where the shortage of food is resulting in violence. José didn't hit as badly but interrupted critically needed relief efforts.
I was glad to hear my daughter has been able to get to her bf's place in St Croix which wasn't hit by more than tropical storm winds. I have no idea how long before the office where she works will even be running.
So she's physically OK, I don't know if the island where she lives and works will have the same problems in the aftermath as the NW Caribbean has been seeing but I know she was pretty shaken and I'm glad she has some respite.
Thoughts and best wishes to Steph 2.0.

Mentioned in another thread, but I'm from coastal GA, and my entire county (Glynn) has been underwater. Apparently us and Savannah got it the worst (flooding wise). The entire county is still closed off, with people who stayed having to fight to be let off the barrier islands. (I'm from one of them, but left to stay with family in Augusta.) Not sure when I'll get back up, which is horrible because I have a 16 year old cat alone in an upstairs room (highest point on the island to begin with so fine from flooding). Left a ton of food and water but I'm still freaking out, wasn't expecting this level of damage since it was cutting so far west.
(On the plus side, dysphoria hasn't been on mind for a few days to the point I'm even forgetting to shave. :X)

I hadn't realized it before but there are two of these threads here. In fact it was Stephanie that pointed it out to me on the phone today. Yes, I was able to talk to her today after I realized I had a number I could try to get a hold of her with. It worked and she called me back earlier today. She had posted she was okay in the other thread and had made another post somewhere else. I missed both.
But yes, Stephanie and family are okay and running on a generator for power. At least it gave me an excuse to actually talk with her for the first time.
Hugs,
Laurie

Here I am! Sorry, I had seen Sinclair's original post in this thread, but since I'd already checked in on the other thread (here: https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php?topic=228103 (https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php?topic=228103)) it seemed redundant to do it again. I didn't realize this one had taken on its own life - and I was causing concern here - until just now.
The remains of the eye went right over us, but my weather station insists there were no gusts at ground level over 60 mph. Mostly small branches in my yard, but lots of old oak trees down all over the place, and some of them took out electric lines. We've been running on a generator since 11 pm on the 10th. The few gas stations that have fuel have long lines, and selection is thin at the grocery store. As noted in the other thread, though, at least it blew most of the heat and humidity out of here. That's good because my little generator won't run the A/C.
The best thing about the storm, though, was getting a call from Laurie. What an awesome, kind thing to do. We had a great talk. I've checked out other groups on the internet and Facebook, etc., but I've never made the kind of personal connections I've made here on Susan's. I've always had a tough time making friends, but the personal concern and love I've been feeling here makes it easy.
So thanks to all who expressed concern, and especially Laurie. You're awesome!
Steph

We were lucky that we only lost power for 1.5 hours while others in the Atlanta area, both north and south of us, still don't have power.

Beverly,
I am glad you are okay and sorry for those less fortunate.
Roll
I hope your cat comes through this okay. I'm sorry that you were one of those caught up in the flooding but glad you were not in it. Possions can be replaced and homes rebuild but you have to be alive to do it. ((Hug)) Glad you got out.

I live in Miami and I lost power for a little over 24 hours. Not all of the Miami area has power now. Everybody should have electricity restored by this weekend.

The TV News people always exaggerate the situation. They show the worst of any disaster to boost their ratings.
Yes, it is bad in the Keys, but everybody should have evacuated. They were given plenty of warning. Most of what you see that was damaged is older wood frame and mobile homes. I did see some damage to concrete block homes that were right by the shore. The storm surge is too strong for almost everything. Rescue workers are in the Keys now searching for people who did not evacuate. I fear that there is more bad news coming.

She threatened to block the already narrow street (LOL) we were blocking her driveway had turned her water off too!
