Title: Nurse Thinks I'm FTM... Is That a Good or Bad thing?
Post by: amydane on October 13, 2017, 03:47:31 AM
Let me preface this with the fact that I still present as male even though I have been on Spiro and Estrogen for nearly 10 years.

I was at my 6 month doctor appointment and meeting with the nurse. I have been going to this clinic for three years. She asked if I need a refill of my testosterone prescription. That sort of caught me off guard because I thought it was fairly obvious I am MTF. I am nearing 40, absolutely no facial hair, and a wishful thinking nearly B cup that I usually wear a sports bra when in guy mode like I was there. I just paused for a moment and said "I do need a refill, but on Spiro, Estrogen, etc..." it was a little awkward.

Has this happened to anyone else? I'm not sure if I should feel hurt that she couldn't tell I was MTF, after all this clinic sees a lot of transgender patients. There were 4 in the waiting room with me. Or should I feel happy she thought I was born female? Ugh!

This is a first for me. In the past I get an occasional "Mam" when I'm at the grocery store in boy mode, but only when they can't see me well from the chest down, like when I'm being helped from behind a tall counter.

I'm leaning more to it being a good thing. Many ftms still have round/small faces due to female puberty and maybe that's what she saw and just assumed. Plus I assume you're a typical male height so even with that she assumed you were afab.

When I met my support worker for the first time she asked me 'which way am I going'. Despite passing 100% by that time although I'm short. So I took it as a positive anyway. People are strange.

Like what you said, you were in guy mode. So usually she would probably thought if MTF they will tend to dress more feminine, FTM will present more boyish. I could be wrong but it is a possibility.

This is what I would suspect as well.  This is about as good of a male fail as it gets from my point of view.

Well, my doctor is going to know my gender identity is female, because I've given my gender therapist permission to speak with her about the anxiety this is causing me. I have an autoimmune illness that is exasperated by stress, and my therapist wants my doctor to be aware and to learn more about my illness. I'm actually relieved my doctor will learn about this from another professional before my next appointment.

Thanks Elis! I hope that is the case. Unfortunately I am 6 foot tall, so I stand out quite a bit.

Well, I remember one time on Canada day (July 1st) 2016 I was near the Manitoba legislative building in Winnipeg and sitting near a water fountain thingy. I was chatting up with another female there and somehow me being trans came up. I admitted I was trans and I perfer the female life. This was however a time in which I was very stressed and doubtful about my life and self so I didnt know what to do. I guess I was presenting somewhat androgynous that day and she told me that she thought I was indeed trans, or that she could see that i was trans. But, she thought I was FTM, and not MTF. FTM pre-eveything I guess?? I wasnt sure how to take that
