Gio here, so I recently went for my top surg consultation and im a smoker (cigs) and i was told also avoid second hand smoking. Due to my job its hard i work as maintenance in an apartment complex and i cant tell people what not to do in their own home. Its a bummer really.. is the surgeon stretching it? Or has anyone else had this policy prior to surgery?

You can ask them nicely to put it out while you are working. If they want their stuff fixed properly I bet they would listen.

It's a common practice for surgeons to recommend or require that you cease smoking entirely and to avoid exposure to second hand as much as possible. I'd encourage you to open up a conversation about this with your surgeon, as some are more strict than others. Your circumstances are obviously different than perhaps someone who worked in an office all day, and your surgeon should have some recommendations or compromises to help you.

It's also personally reasonable to ask politely if they could refrain from smoking while you're in their apartments due to health/medical reasons. It is accurate and true, but it's also a topic that most people will respect your privacy on and not dig further. There are countless medical reasons to need to avoid secondhand smoke, so it wouldn't raise many flags.

I can not tell people what to do in their own private apartment that they pay for that is disrespectful for one. And for two he is saying even if the smoke was in there prior to entering is will cause a positive nicotine test. He mean none what so even not after a cig gets lit. Maybe you're not a smoker and doesn't really know how tabocco lingers. Ive come to find out he had also done only 10 top surgeries so I am looking for a different surgeon.

Well, I can tell you that's a load of ****. I'm not a smoker myself but my fiancée and her family are (she doesn't smoke in our house but they chain smoke in theirs). I get a huge blood panel done at work every year for insurance categorization purposes and they're extremely strict about their no nicotine policy. This last test, which happened just a month ago, I was at her dad's house the day before and was exposed to a ridiculous amount of secondhand smoke.
The results came back negative.

I don´t know if this is useful or not, but I sometimes wear a respro mask to commute.
It stops exhaust fumes and that kind of stuff. You will look weird.

Otherwise just politely ask them to smoke outside, you could say  you´re having surgery and were advised not to inhale cigarette smoke, I don´t think they´d mind.
