Title: Depressing views from my mum

Had dinner with my fanily for first time in a long time. They don't know I'm transgender even though after therapy I tried to give some real clues like 'i don't identify with men'.
Tonight my mum started to decry that my son, 9, had told her: "It's OK for two men to get married."
She said it was a disgrace that politicians bow down to the LGBT lobby to be fashionable etc..
She said it'll 'turn children gay.' Wow. Just wow.
I told her that was nonsense, but there ain't a hope in hell I'll ever tell her the truth. I've never felt so distant

Your mum's a bigot, or uneducated.
Best you keep some distance.
Best you keep some distance.

My dad has said similar things. But then he's also told my sister that he would support any family member if they were transgender. Well we will see about that.

I'm sorry to hear that--some of the things I've heard from my family as well is particularly crushing. My sister recently found out that I am trying out a new name at my college and though she did not react violently, she said she could never use it because it's "not the truth." Maybe that will change in time, but I don't count on it.
I hope you find your peace, be it within or outside your family. Best wishes to you.

Depending on what that bowing down entails, I can see a point about just doing things politically for instant popularity. Depends what it is and how many people need or want it, and what the consequences are.

Yeah, that's pretty dumb stuff to think/say.

I dunno, the term 'LGBT lobby' usually sends up a bit of a red flag for me.
As much as I don't like to tell other people their business, in the (approximate) words of Dan Savage, the best or only leverage you can have over your parents is your presence. If her intolerance is going to characterize your relationship with her going forward, then you're not obligated to continue to see her on the basis of familial ties alone.
I hope that kid's alright, though. If they turn out to be LGBT that's gonna be a rough ride for them...
