Title: Did you enjoy Disney's Mulan?
Post by: PurpleWolf on December 14, 2017, 11:38:59 PM
For those who don't know: The Disney movie Mulan is about a girl who goes to the army dressed as a man.

I've heard many people (girls & boys) liked this movie! The girls seem to identify with the song Reflections, for example. And guys with the idea that Mulan is equal to the guys there!

So did you like it? Love it? What was your 'Mulan moment' you identified with,  :D?

---
I was fascinated by it! I was always into any possible crossdresser/transgender type of stuff as a kid. And this was it!

I found the movie okay overall too - but I especially liked it because of this, of course,  ;).

I especially identify with the scene where the guys walk beside a rice field & the two women check them out. Until they see baby-faced Mulan & s->-bleeped-<- which makes Mulan embarrassed... But instead of Mulan being embarrassed because she is actually a girl and not into these women - I think this scene describes well my own embarrassment as a guy but perceived as a woman... ;)

I always hated the song I'll make a man out of you - though it seems other trans guys love it  :D! I also especially hated the Reflections song...!

It was ok; not my favourite Disney film. I preferred the ones that felt more traditional. My brother enjoyed this film more than I did and made us watch it constantly  :P

How can you not love the woman that defeated the Huns and saved the emperor with a group of ->-bleeped-<-s?

Hearing "Reflection" the first time was actually the moment I first articulated to myself that I wanted to transition one day. It's not my favorite Disney movie overall, but it will always be significant to me because of how it helped me explore my identity.

Mulan was actually the only Disney chick/princess I liked and I liked the whole story even more when I learned that it was based on a Chinese legend.

You don't have to be a chick to not be into women though x'D
I have absolutely no interest in women whatsoever and even though I didn't get embarrassed I got confused when suddenly women started to hit on me. I sure had noticed the overall change in how women acted towards me but I didn't get the weird, indirect way they flirted at first and wasn't aware that they actually did just that and would even see me as a potential interest because I never saw them that way, I was just wondering why they acted that oddly and why they would giggle at everything I said in that silly way.

There also was a situation when I was on vacation with my parents where two women acted really strange towards me in the town and I was thinking: "What the hell is their damn problem!" and then I heard my father saying to my mother in an amused way:"And now all the wenches already hit on him!" And I was like: "Huh?" ;D

Yes I quite liked the movie. Although I didn't see too much into it from a trans person's perspective - after all Mulan dresses as a man under duress to help someone else, and at the end she's quite happy to return to her life as a woman. (I've seen the film held up as a sort of trans message but there is no trans message specifically within it that I see. Other than that it's stressful or dangerous having to hide your identity in some settings. I even heard someone say they assumed Mulan was trans - not the impression I got at all from the story).

That said it's one of Disney's I enjoy more than most, especially from the "post Lion King era" of Disney where I have fewer favorites from them. I like the original story it came from and the idea is certainly an appealing one with a lot of potential for both fun and serious social commentary.
