Title: This shall not pass my lips

Okra.

We had one of these threads before and it was great fun. What food are you absolutely not eating?

Hugs, Devlyn

Chocolate.

Not in any way, shape or form. It will be a cold day in Milton Keynes before I ever eat any of that vile stuff. Eww.

I like okra, but then again just about everything else as well.  Hence my fabulously eggplant like figure...

Sadly  I am like a little kid and will put just about anything in my mouth no matter how vile it is. I have a small list of things I will avoid if possible like spicy hot foods, raw meats or something with caraway seeds but I have been known to eat those even though I wasn't starving. Caraway seeds, because I am a super taster are extremely bitter and I can detect one on a loaf of bread. Spicy hot food because I am not into pain and raw meat because once on a boy scout camping trip I got a nasty case of food poisoning from raw ground beef. In the last few year I have managed to reach the point where I can tolerate rare meat but I leave raw meat to those who can't cook. After all, wasn't fire invented to make food taste better?

Liver tastes awful, and your eating the all nasty stuff that had to be metabolized by it.  Its like eating an oil filter.

I like okra with tomato sauce and seasoning my mom adds.
I'll eat anything but I could never get myself to try tongues. My older siblings all loved it and I wanted to try but couldn't lol

Nope. Vegetables and ground beef wrapped in foil and tossed in the fire for far to short of time. It hit in the early morning and the only rest room was a hole dug about 6 inches in the ground. The kids who dug it couldn't even construct a proper latrine. :icon_no:

Ding!Ding!Ding! Vegemite for the win  >:-)   Horrid nasty stuff better off used as emergency repair glue, bullet hole filler etc... Beat out split pea soup by a good margin

With me it isn't so much a particular food item but more the preparation and how it turns out when ready

Not real big on most homemade chilies  :P  But I'll buy a can of the hot and spicy stuff at the store and eat it smothered on cornbread

K-rations generally sucked but some MREs weren't too bad, not sure what they're using in the field these days

I love avo.s but only when in season - Ah yes, and foil wrapped food items would be placed in the engine compartment of the vehicle and would be nicely cooked and ready when we would arrive at the destination

Vegemite is black and shiny and thick. It reminds me of crude oil though the oil would probably taste better. The stuff Tristan puts vegemite on ranges from a little weird to just wrong! Lol. I tried telling him vegemite was illegal in the USA but he didn't buy it.

I have to agree. Avocado is nasty. I can't get past the slimy texture. And 2 seconds after cutting one they turn brown and get even more slimy and mushy.  Nasty!

It's funny some of these answers because avocado is supposed to be high in potassium so being on spiro less is better of it. And too much black licorice is supposed to have a bad effect too but I forget what.

I just remembered I don't eat any meat or poultry so that's something to add to my list. I think I had a very friendly australian person offer me to try vegemite while staying at a hostile and it was horrid lol

I cannot stand vegemite but my USA born spouse has it on toast mixed with peanut butter and something called Fluff that is bought from specialty USA food shops. There are no words.

But Faith, how can you have corned beef and cabbage if you don't cook the cabbage. And what about sauerkraut? That's goot stufts Maynard.
Title: Re: This shall not pass my lips
Post by: Laurie on December 23, 2017, 06:15:08 PM
Vegemite should be thrown out at the source because it is a waste byproduct of beer brewing. It could be used to slop the hogs I suppose....

QuoteWhat is Vegemite made out of?

Vegemite is one of several yeast extract spreads sold in Australia. It is made from leftover brewers' yeast extract (a by-product of beer manufacture) and various vegetable and spice additives.

The first time I ever saw Tristan eat vegemite he put it on toast. He asked if I wanted to try it and I said no thank you. He put some on a bite of toast and fed it to me anyway. OMG, how disgusting!  I felt like scrubbing my tongue with a SOS pad! Nasty!  He puts vegemite on omelets and scrambled eggs. That's just wrong! Lol

Your overcooking the cabbage. It should be one of the last things in the pot and when it's tender but not soft, you need to get it off the heat. Cook it any more than that and the wonderful sulfur compounds come out for an unpleasant dining experience.

What is Marmite and what does it taste like?
A battle between Vegemite and Marmite. That's right, the age-old war of the concentrated yeast extract spread. Marmite, a British favorite and Vegemite, an Australian staple, are what we'd refer to as an acquired taste. ... These two funky spreads are usually eaten on toast, sometimes with butter.Mar 5, 2013

Interesting read about a Marmite vs Vegemite taste test

Count me in on the licorice hate. I truly, just truly from the depths of my soul, despise the taste.

Usually though for me it is about texture not flavor. I like most flavors. Some textures send my OCD into overdrive. My biggest trigger? Gristle in meats. As such, one thing I will never, ever, EVER eat is a cheap hotdog. Those little bubbles of pure fat in it.. biting down into them and it being like... just a hard white chunk in the middle of the meat... Oh jesus I am seriously physically ill just thinking about it. Same thing for cheap burgers made with high fat meat. No, no, no, no, no, no.
