Title: Sneaky hrt insurance?
Post by: hauntpsych on December 23, 2017, 05:38:54 PM
I'm already on my mom's insurance through her work, but 1) I don't have an insurance card from it and 2) I'm pretty sure she'd flip if I tried to get gender therapy and/or T thru that insurance. I was thinking that to solve both problems, I'd go sign up for some state health insurance so I could pursue transition, do you think I could do this?

There is nothing illegal about having two insurance policies and I did for years. The catch is when you file a claim, both insurance companies must be aware of the other insurance policy and they decide who is going to pay the bill. If you drop your mothers policy, then your mother will be unaware of your health care. On the other hand, a personal policy could range between $400 and $600 a month plus deductibles for a policy that provides some of the coverage that you want. At these costs, you might be better off to pay out of pocket for what you desire and use your mom's policy for other medical costs.

or you could try and eliminate this altogether. Come out to your mom that way she knows you are going to use it. I think being candid and open to her will help. I know you are nervous and worried about this. Cause I was and I am 37 years old. I mean when you start changing when are going to tell her? I mean you cannot have transition changes happening without her noticing. Many people may not notice but, she will. Explain to her fully how you feel, how things affect you, and your goals. Now if she does freak out and have a huge consternation about it all then go seek your own insurance.
