Title: Astride your hot dog...
Post by: Megan. on December 29, 2017, 05:32:21 PM
Ketchup,  mustard,  chilli,  cheese, bacon,  onions (cooked or raw)...

What do you like to see taking pride of place along the top of your hot dog?

Ketchup and French's mustard are my faves,  with a few soft and sweet onions. [emoji4]

Sautéed red onion relish, brown mustard and dill pickle spears!  Yum!

Megan aren't they called frankfurters where you are?

Mustard and relish if I'm eating it standing up. If I can have it on a plate, I'll have a chili cheese dog with sauerkraut.

I watched one of those "Ten Best Hotdogs" shows, and of course they visited Chicago. The host explained that everyone knows ketchup is sweet, kids like ketchup. But if you're above the age of eight and ask for ketchup on your dog in the Windy City, the vendor is going to point at the condiments and tell you to ruin it yourself!

In Germany they have frankfurters. In the UK it's the humble sausage/banger.

As for the dog itself, I buy Pearl Country Club hotdogs. The first time I had one I was hooked.

Hendos.

Erm... Henderson's Relish. Something only available in the North of England, apparently. At least offline.

I don't eat hot dogs very often but every now and then I'll have a craving for one... or two

Sometimes I'll make a couple of chili cheese dogs with some horseradish mustard, chopped red onion and smother the chili on top - Yes, it has to be eaten with a fork

Other times I'll make a more traditional mustard dog with chopped red onion, tomato slices and dill pickles

All beef wieners only and usually a side of fries

Ketchup on a hot dog is just wrong imo LOL

Hugs

There is nothing better than a grilled Dodger Dog with mustard, onions and relish. That is except a great baseball game. After the game try Tommy's w/chili on Beverly and Rampart. There is also Pinks and Carney's. Where you can get dogs named after celebrates.

Lol, yeah, as a Sheffielder I can attest that it is indeed the answer to everything. ;D It does have a bit of a cult following and a regional identity. Which is annoying when I try to get my friends to try it who don't live where I do.

When I was younger there was this guy who ran a hot dog cart outside a club I would frequent

Those dogs were awesome and there was always a great selection of condiments including chili so no matter your preference there was a good chance you could get "your dog" there  ;D

Drooling  but so bad for the body - good for the soul (occasionally)

Years ago, knew a guy who worked concessions at Dodger Stadium and would bring day-old dogs to the office.

I can post my recipe for my Rolled Oat dense Staffordshire oatcakes and how to make them some time I suppose (A mix between South Cheshire (Macclesfield) and Staffs Oatcakes) . Apparently a version of Indian flat breads brought back from India 150 years ago, when UK had colonies (not going into the political and humanitarian side of that). Anyone from that area of the England that emigrates elsewhere always misses them.

It's more like what I won't put on a hotdog. Mustard, ketchup, chili cheese, sauerkraut, coleslaw, raw onions, caramelized onions, jalapeño slices, relish, hot sauce and Dill pickles. Something else I do sometimes is wrap the hot dog in a slice of bacon then grilling it. That's stuff I put on a hotdog but not all at once of course. I'm picky about hotdogs. They have to be beef. The ones made from chicken and pork are nasty. I would never microwave a hotdog. They come out all uneven and the ends explode. I boil them, roast them or grill them.

That sounds really good. Hot dogs are good with so many things. My brother has put both baked beans and potato salad on his hotdog. I was afraid my boyfriend might put vegemite on his hot dog but thankfully he hasn't so far. Lol.

I like to take the hot dog bun and squirt both sides with it before putting to hotdog in the fill it with tasty sauerkraut and finally pull that unfit for human consumption hot dog out of it and throw it away. Now the hotdog is ready to eat.

For me it is less about the toppings, and more about properly cooking the proper hotdog. Kosher and angus, no exceptions, and highest quality you can find of that. Make horizontal slices every half an inch, not too deep. Slice down vertically to about the center of the hotdog. Grill on charcoal, ONLY CHARCOAL, letting the rendered juices drop into the grill causing flareups that char the insides of the hotdog. Rotate until skin on all sides is bubbley blackened (not completely, but like 75%). Keep toppings simple: Ketchup, mustard, relish down the middle of the dog where you made the split.

So no $1.00 a pack hotdogs made from snouts & tails and don't microwave it until the ends explode and it's orange crunchy. Got it.

Okay I probably could eat  Ellie's cooked hotdogs by her description. I usually don't get to eat hot dogs that are grilling on a BBQ for me. Before they are edible someone comes along and throws it away thinking it was cooked too much.

Many good ideas!

I do enjoy the fancy dogs or sausages, such as the ones with bits of apple and appealing spices.
I like a really good premium hot dog bun too, although I have eaten them without any bread.
That does save on calories but I would rather have them on the bun.  Love them brats too.
A thicker dog is better than those thin ones.  Foot long dogs have fewer bun choices unless you overhang them on both sides of the bun.   Footlongs are typically thin, you just get a longer thin dog, so they are more an occasional novelty.  Polish sausage can be tasty too.

I am getting hungry!

Deep Fried Hotdogs.......  mmm, mmm, good.  I know the owner of a small local coffee shop and when visiting him after hours, he will put a few hot dogs in his deep fat fryer and then we add all the toppings.  The hot dog comes out plump with a crispy outside.... so very good.

I like my hotdogs on a bun several ways:
*with just sauerkraut and lots of mustard ....
*or with onion, pickle and mustard, also perhaps with tomato slice....
*or with chili (no beans) and shredded cheddar cheese...

But.... absolutely no ketchup and no mayonnaise on my hotdogs.

I also like hotdogs in my casseroles such as homemade Mac&Cheese and also Scalloped Potatoes

When I travel to the Chicago area I always try to find a local fast food place that make genuine "Chicago Dogs"
*An authentic Chicago-style hot dog is a hotdog on a steamed poppy seed bun, topped with yellow mustard, chopped white onions, bright green sweet pickle relish, a dill pickle spear, tomato slices or wedges, pickled sport peppers and a dash of celery salt.
The iconic Chicago Dog recipe does not include ketchup, and there is a strong opinion among many Chicagoans and many hot dog connoisseurs that ketchup is not acceptable and most Chicago hot dog vendors do not offer ketchup as a condiment."

Unfortunately I do not get to Chicago often enough....   not only is Chicago famous for their Chicago Dogs but also their Pizza.   My mouth is watering already as I write this.
