What is the difference between the estradiol "patches" and the "sublingual" pells estradiol !

Which one have a much lower risk of complications?

and Any of them has more benefits plus Whichever Positive effect at The long-term?

Both delivery methods are safe and effective.

Patches sometime get rubbed off the skin when wet or sweaty. The tablets are short acting and should be taken several times a day, but they are cheap and plentiful. Patches contain enough estradiol to last at least a week on the skin, but they cost more.

With both methods, the drug is absorbed through the skin, either external skin or under the tongue skin.

Have you considered Gel...I get excellent results. Sorry can't help with patches and "sublingual" is just another way to absorb it. I asked my Dr about taking it sublingually and she didn't think it would really make much of a difference overall other than sublingual may be faster absorption but over all levels of E were unlikely to be better...although some girls swear by it and I am not a Dr  ;D

Studies have unequivocally shown higher levels with sublingual administration of E2 BUT I tried oral vs sublingual and got the same physical results (i.e. breast growth).

I have only used patches, so I can't do a comparison.  But I have had no problems with them.  The ones I use last half a week (3.5 days).  I change them Friday mornings and Monday evenings, to get the most even spacing.

I've been on HRT for nearly a year, so about 100 patch changes, and I have only had problems with one or two not sticking.  If I am careful to stick them on wrinkle-free the first time, they never give me problems.  They only fail to stick if you have bad wrinkles so water can get under them in the shower, or if you try to reposition it after you have stuck it on.  Apparently, the adhesive only works well once.

I have been using the patches since the first day. I have never had one fall off. As Kathy mentioned try to find an area that doesn't wrinkle too much. I rotate between areas on my lower stomach and the sides of my butt cheeks. Make sure the area is hair free and prep the area with an alcohol patch first. My patches have withstood several exceptionally sweaty hours from exercising on an elliptical machine and they did not show any signs of loosening. The adhesive can be difficult to remove, but a q-tip and baby oil work pretty well.

I'm on the patch myself.  I started on low dose and was bumped up to a double dose a few months ago.  This meant my pharmacy having me wear two patches at the same time since they only carry one dosage.  It was tricky at first finding the sweet spots where they will stay. Mainly in a few spots on my hips or lateral thighs work.  Come March I have labs checked again and I'll find out where I am.  If they decide to increase my E then I'll probably have to switch to sublingual.

 I was on patches for over two years never had much problem with them and I like the results. I needed to use multiple patches to get my levels up. A few months ago  I started to to get a rash and  itchy dry skin where I applied them. I was running out of locations to put them as it took about two weeks to heal, I looked like I was attacked by a giant squid. I think the cause is my skin has changed so much from HRT.
I have been using pills sublingualy now for a little over a month, emotionally I feel the same. Physically I have noticed an increase in breast growth whether that is due to the switch or just a cyclical process I don't know. I will be getting my levels checked in a month to see whet they are at.

That's one of the problems I've run into.  My butt isn't big enough for all these patches.

I have not used sublingual so cannot speak on them.

I started on patches which I found to be a PIA to deal with... a lot of maintenance per week... this is a relative perspective of having not started HRT to starting HRT w/patches which I only used for a few months before switching to Estradiol injections which have been heaven for more than 2 years now.

I switched because I was not achieving the right levels from patches and did so with injections. The patches mostly stayed on but were just a pain to deal with (removing/changing them, occasionally they'd come off between dosages, left marks on me, etc.).

I didn't switch away for those negative reasons... they just didn't work well for me medically... that was a blessing because injections are stellar... 10 min or less maintenance once per week... that's it. Patches required maint at least twice per week and I had to maintain counts of patches (like two or three or some such) and if one came off, used a new one for only a partial period (wasteful/costly)... it was just more cumbersome.

From what I see, though, some folks find patches really work well... so I think there's a few things here:

• each person is different so you have to find what works for you
• HRT can be a moving target as the technology changes relatively quickly and there's new findings from time to time, and I think trans care specialists are getting better, improving themselves and the entire process (so check w/your doc to find out the latest and make sure you're going to someone well-informed... usually, but not necessarily always, someone with strong medical skills and a close supportive connection to the general community within your area).

Patches have worked really well for me, convenient and as I travel a lot it removes the "when should I take it" issue.  I echo the wrinkle problems and occasionally I get a bit of irritation.  I have only had one patch unstick in 2 years and that was after an hour in a bubbling hot tub!
