good thread!

greenday's entire CD "American Idiot" is a favorite of mine, but I'll try to keep politics out of this thread and not name a specific song!  :o

bossboosa has a song "wicked games" just now getting airplay -- nice.

death cab for cutie's "body and soul" is cool.

tear you apart's "she wanted revenge" I like, but its not for everybody!

All I have on my truck radio are country stations.  Not bad for a northern girl!  :D

Try Carolyn Dawn Johnson (Another Canadian) and JoDee Messina.

Ahhhhh Chaunte, a girl after my own heart.

My current fav is - When I get where I'm going - Duet Brad Paisley & Dolly Parton :)

Can't beat Country.

It's funny in the U.S. it's called Country and Western, but in Canada it's Country.

It's called Country and Western in the US because it is a combination of two distinctive styles within the same genres. The country in C&W is more of an eastern style with songs about coal mining, lost loves, cheating wifes, cheating husbands etc while the W has more a western flavor that favors songs about gunslingers cow pokes and such Yipee Ky Yipeee ay. If you listen to the songs of someone like Lorretta Lynne and compared them to one of the popular western singers you would here the distinctive sound both in style and lyrics.

Blues has a similar background as far as different styles go but those are so many that the name of the genre would be too long. We have Memphis Blues, Chicago Blues, St Louis Blues, New Orleans or Swamp Blues, Texas Blues,  and so on.

My favorite music is Blues as you might guess. BB King, Katie Smith,  John Lee Hooker, Bonnie Rate, Kenny Wayne Shepard, Anita Baker, and of course the dearly departed Stevie Ray Vaughn.

As Country goes, I would think in Canada it would be Country and Great White North.  ;D

non-CW fan here!  however, I was stuck in a car with limited music selections once and the Dixie Chicks CD grew on me after a while. There is another reason for liking the Dixie Chicks but . . .  ;D

I have a selection of songs I always play when I am online. All getting a bit dated now, but I have heard nothing new that really impresses me :(   hope this is not a sign of age or somthing (my daughter reckons it is- but what would she know :)   )
Elvis Costello - Olivers Army :)  somthing I can sing along with and what other song these days features Neo Nazis
The Beach Boys most of their songs :)
Boston "More Than a Feeling" & Hunters & Collectors " Holy Grail"- same music totally diff songs
Steve Earle  - "Copperhead Road" - somthing about the air of menace in that song
Stereophonics "Handbags & Gladrags"  - I sit here & sing along :)
songs by Karen Carpenter - best female singer ever ( well nearly)
Dire Straits "Romeo & Juliet"
Country & Western - who sung "Stand by your Man" & "I fall to Pieces"  country & western is like truely precious pearls floating in an ocean of crap

"I fall to pieces" was recorded by Patsy Cline.  She took Loretta Lynn under her wing and gave her a start.

"Stand By Your Man" is Tammy Wynette

I could name all kinds of songs I love, but probably no one would remember them.  So I will leave it at Greensleeves.

Sarah,
Whatever makes you think that - your taste excellent, your enjoyment of Greensleeves proves that.  So :) why do you assume others here would not love the songs you do.

Taste is music is wide ranging - I find traditional songs/melodies like Greensleeves, Skye Boat Song, Whose Woods are These; wonderful.  I also enjoy music like Gangsta Paradise (thou rap is hard to take usually)

Go on :) list some longs you enjoy.

Two favorite songs of the moment

"I Want To Spend My Lifetime Loving You" by Tina Arena
"You Raise Me Up"  performed by Celtic Woman.

I'm thinking of using one or both for a campaign theme. Lifetime because when I listen to it it reminds me of my love for America and I picture in my mind different parts of her I've been to and others I've yet to see in person. It also makes me think about what America could be if she tries.

You Raise Me Up is very sweeping and uplifting. I lean towards Celtic Woman being part Irish myself. Which reminds me of a joke. Why did god invent whiskey? To keep the Irish from taking over the world. Haven't had a drink in three months. Guess what I'm doing?  ;D

aah Chaunte :)
Irish songs - you reminded me.
Whiskey in the Jar
Seven Drunken Nights - yes I know its a rude song but :)
Londenderry Aire -   now is this song a Catholic or Protestant one? and why is it always sung by men?? Unless the men are gay?  To me it HAS to be a song sung by the wife/lover of a soldier (how else could you interpret the second verse) - its an Irish counterpart to Scots High Road/Low Road.
and Irish songs naturalised in Oz  "The Minstrel Boy"  "Wild Colonial Boy"

All the songs posted here, had overlooked them until they get mentioned & starts me reminiscing :)

loving music & song

NATALIE IMBRUGLIA, Torn

I'm all out of faith, this is how I feel
I'm cold and I am shamed lying naked on the floor
Illusion never changed into something real
I'm wide awake and I can see the perfect sky is torn
You're a little late, I'm already torn

So I guess the fortune teller's right
Should have seen just what was there and not some holy light
To crawl beneath my veins and now
I don't care, I have no luck, I don't miss it all that much
There's just so many things that I can't touch, I'm torn

That's just how I feel right now...So at the moment that is my favorite song.

Plus its a beautiful melody...

I have to many favorites to list. But since the topic was at the moment...I could answer it

Hi Everyone:

Currently my favourite is Melissa Etheridge's song - Run for Life.  Gives me goose bumps everytime I hear it.

Other artists I like;

Mediaeval Babes: (apparently some are former women of the evening) their music is Celtic background. http://www.globalvillageidiot.net/babes.htm  (http://www.globalvillageidiot.net/babes.htm)
Allison Krause (anything by her)
Jennfier Warren (all the songs on the Famous Blue Raincoat album)
Cat Stevens is my all time favourite though, I love everything by him.  We have all his albums/cds.  For me a Saturday in the house with his music blaring is my idea of heaven.

Since it's nearly St. Pat's, I am listening to all of my Irish tunes...Altan, Boys Of The Lough, the Clancy Brothers (some great rebel songs there, Chaunte!), Chieftains, Cherish the Ladies...you get the idea.  I am also listening to the Austin Lounge Lizards.  They have a great song called "The Dogs, They Really Miss You".

LOL, how appropriate! Have you noticed that when viewed through the lens of TSism, every long song, every longing-for poem, and so on... somehow speaks to us? All that pining away *for* the girl becomes to *be* her, to find our soul again crying down there in some dark, cramped space.

Dido's "Here With Me" is still probably my favorite. It gets under my skin for some reason - in a good way.

Otherwise, I'm a huge fan of the Balligomingo/Delerium/Conjure One trio. Most of you are probably thinking, "who the...?" It's an odd sound, not for everyone, but the music perfectly reflects my soul, my way of being.

The beginning of Balligomingo's "Priviledge:"

I am the freedom that you're fighting
I am the sweetness that you're hiding
I am the heaven at your door and I am waiting...

Fake Plastic Trees by Radiohead.  Beautiful, sad song.  It's ten years old, but I heard it for the first time (that I can recall) only a couple of weeks ago.  I'm going to try to play it at this Thursday's Gender Smash - if I can get through it without choking up. :'(

Celia,

There are several songs I have difficulty singing because I cry - and do so regardless of how i am presenting.  One is "Sara-Beth," by Rascal Flatts, which talks about childhood lukemia.

The other song is by James McDurmontt called "Chistmas In The Trenches."  It's written from the perspective of a WWI soldier who lived the "Christmas Miracle."  At midnight of Christmas Eve, British adn German soldiers left their trenches, met halfway between their lines, and celebrated Christmas.

Commanding officers on both sides were furious with the units involved.  They were pulled from the line and didn't see combat again.  (Ever notice how the US & England always seem to have some sort of military operation around Christmas?  This is the reason why.)

If we ever wanted a theme song, I think this could be it...

Chaunte

Song: Travelin' Thru from TransAmerica
Artist: Dolly Parton Lyrics

Well I can't tell you where I'm going, I'm not sure of where I've been
But I know I must keep travelin' till my road comes to an end
I'm out here on my journey, trying to make the most of it
I'm a puzzle, I must figure out where all my pieces fit
Like a poor wayfaring stranger that they speak about in song
I'm just a weary pilgrim trying to find what feels like home
Where that is no one can tell me, am I doomed to ever roam
I'm just travelin', travelin', travelin', I'm just travelin' on

Questions I have many, answers but a few
But we're here to learn, the spirit burns, to know the greater truth
We've all been crucified and they nailed Jesus to the tree
And when I'm born again, you're gonna see a change in me

God made me for a reason and nothing is in vain
Redemption comes in many shapes with many kinds of pain
Oh sweet Jesus if you're listening, keep me ever close to you
As I'm stumblin', tumblin', wonderin', as I'm travelin' thru

I'm just travelin', travelin', travelin', I'm just travelin' thru
I'm just travelin', travelin', travelin', I'm just travelin' thru

Oh sometimes the road is rugged, and it's hard to travel on
But holdin' to each other, we don't have to walk alone
When everything is broken, we can mend it if we try
We can make a world of difference, if we want to we can fly

Goodbye little children, goodnight you handsome men
Farewell to all you ladies and to all who knew me when
And I hope I'll see you down the road, you meant more than I knew
As I was travelin', travelin', travelin', travelin', travelin' thru

I'm just travelin', travelin', travelin', I'm just travelin'
Drifting like a floating boat and roaming like the wind
Oh give me some direction lord, let me lean on you
As I'm travelin', travelin', travelin', thru

I'm just travelin', travelin', travelin', I'm just travelin' thru
I'm just travelin', travelin', travelin', I'm just travelin' thru

Like the poor wayfaring stranger that they speak about in song
I'm just a weary pilgrim trying to find my own way home
Oh sweet Jesus if you're out there, keep me ever close to you
As I'm travelin', travelin', travelin', as I'm travelin' thru
