Title: What Messenger app are most people using now?
Post by: jessica_rosalia on January 28, 2018, 08:18:52 AM
I seem to have lost most of my contacts when Yahoo took a dump on their messenger app a few years ago.  All the tg friends / contacts i had online from 2004 - 2012 via Yahoo instant messenger are gone.  I belonged to a Klinefelters Syndrome support group via yahoo as well and now that seems to no longer exist.  I'm going through a difficult time and trying to reach out again.  I seem to have had a much wider network of support back then but seems most of it was through Yahoo. I don't want to use Facebook in regards to anything concerning my intersex / tg related issues.

Well Facebook isn't good if not out yet and not wanting relatives to know about anything tg or intersex related

I use Trillian as a replacement for yahoo which allows for syncing chats across devices and has mobile and desktop components.  Also it supports most instant messaging protocols and can be a central hub for most IM apps (I don't think it supports Whatsapp)

I believe WhatsApp requires a smartphone and unfortunately my sis that I still chat with daily only owns a stupidphone.

WhatsApp works with me too!

Most of the traditional IM clients are dead or dying, which depresses me as someone with a 6 digit ICQ number. ;D Trillian is a good piece of software, but it just uses the dead and dying protocols so won't last when they all die out for good. WhatsApp unfortunately does have some exposure issues (I have to use male name on it because a few people in my work contacts are on it frustratingly, and I don't thin you can separate them).

I'm actually becoming very fond of google hangouts personally for groups. I've been using it in school projects, and it is convenient even if the default alert sound is annoying as all hell.

Younger crowds stick to the arbitrary social media flavor of the week, which is still snapchat around here based on what my sister says, but instagram is big too.

My family uses Telegram.  It has it's pros and cons.  One of my gaming groups uses Discord but that is more like a chat room app than texting or messaging.

You can always put your initials or something completely neutral :) in any case people don't get notifications with your chosen Whatsapp name (unless they haven't added you to their contacts). It shows the name they saved you under.

Ohhh, good to know. I didn't realize it went off your own contacts list for naming.

ICQ used to be the place the cool kids were. Now it's a good place to be if you want to be spied on by the Kremlin. ;D

Yes, right there with you... Personal use: Text Message, iMessage, Telegram, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Disccord, IRC and for Business use  Skype, Skype for Business, Slack and MS Teams. My phone is pretty much beeping every 2 minutes :D Occasionally Tapatalk Messenger,,, but that is mostly confusing

Not sure there is any single good one. Big issue also is the larger the group of people is you want to communicate to, the larger the selection of Messengers will be. My Family refuses to use anything but Telegram. But that does not do video well, so they added Google Duo... There is also the issue of platform independence so you can bridge between the iOS and the Android world.
At least work is finally reducing the number of options, so these will go down to most likely Teams only. Maybe a bit of Skype.

I've been loyal to an app called "Text Plus" for, mmmm....Idk like 4 years now maybe? It's always been a nice free texting app for my iPod that basically makes it a phone as long as I am connected to internet.

But lately it's been going weird. I no longer can send or receive messages to certain people. I'm thinking maybe they no longer support whatever phone they have. The app is probably dying. I'm probably one of the few left in life who use it. The public chats version of it shut down last year I think it was.
I'm considering trying out that WhatsApp thingy just cuz I have some contacts I'd like to keep in touch with. I'll see if it works out.

Ever consider a Rolodex?  I wouldn't' trust a computer with all my lifelong contacts.

OMG, my grandma still uses one of those things. All the info on my phone is backed up so if my phone got destroyed or lost I would be fine. A Rolodex is quite obsolete just like landlines. Which my grandparents also still use. Sigh.

Kik is better for privacy than WhatsApp or fb messenger; as it only requires a username to access

Landline more likely to work in a zombie apocalypse though!

I use the Verizon messenger app.  It's the one Verizon app that is fully useful and the only one that they don't force you to have on your Verizon phone.

WhatsApp is my #1 because that's what 99% of the people I know or talk to use. I also think the fact that you don't need a username or password is very convenient since it basically works with your number just like regular texting except with way more features and you can chat with anyone all over the world.

A Rolodex can't get hacked or the data accidentally wiped out. It never leaves my desk so there's no chance of losing it.  Or dropping in the bath tub..  The only danger is it could get lost in a fire, but the odds of that happening are pretty slim.  I'll take my chances.

I understand your concerns but in all honesty I don't think anyone would go through the hassle of hacking my phone just to read my conversations with my mom or my friends :D unless you're the president, I don't think any of us are that interesting or relevant.

I do use Discord, occasionally. But for the most part I'm very antisocial, lol. Facebook is something you do when you fall asleep whilst reading. I don't have a vast array of online friends. Or offline for that matter, so I've never really needed to keep in touch with a lot of people.

I won't touch anything to do with Facebook (or google) for privacy reasons. Skype has the advantage that Microsoft are fairly incompetent at spying on people.
