Title: How to use Facebook if not currently out?

I have a Facebook account under my birth name. I don't want to use this account to connect with tg friends since my family and relatives are also linked to this account. I don't believe you are allowed multiple Facebook profiles. Also, it seems that most of the popular messenger apps are linked to your cell phone number, which could also be a problem. How are people here navigating through this when privacy is a concern?

While yes Facebook does not like people to have multiple accounts I know of several friends that two or more. As for phone number I think you can register with email as well. So use a secondary email address if you have one. If not, create on just for transgender stuff.
I just came out on Facebook yesterday so I changed everything on there. I changed my gender a few months ago to see if anyone noticed and only a few did.

You might not be allowed but I've had at least 8, none of them in my real name. No-one seems to know if you do. Checking up every account made would be too much trouble for them

I only have one account. If people search "trans" they will see my name in the groups. But that's just adds to the excitement. It's also a way to come out.

Before I was out, I had two accounts: one for my male persona and one for my female persona. The Facebook police don't like it, but they don't actively seek out people with multiple accounts. They only respond to complaints.
The thing about having multiple accounts is that it is very hard to keep them separate. You need to access them from different machines or at least from different browsers on one machine. You cannot ever have any friends in common, not can you like the same pages or be members of the same groups. Don't use one identity to look at the other identity. FB keeps track of that kind of thing.
What you need to avoid is FB suggesting your new identity as a potential friend for people you know under your old identity. If it finds anything in common, it is likely to expose your two identities as people who know each other in real life. The risk is if friends see pictures of your other identity and make the connection.
So you have to be totally paranoid that you don't accidentally make a connection.

I can still see some of my old accounts on my friends' friend lists. I'm surprised they haven't deleted them. Facebook has never contacted me about any of them.
Still, keeping two lives completely separate is a pain. I used to run Facebook accounts for two different avenues of artwork and I didn't want them to mix or for one to be associated with the other. (I got tired of it in the end and merged them.)
You can do it, but it's very annoying.

I really don't like Facebook mostly because of how little privacy there is really. The bad news is if you did make two accounts you will have to live on it like a fugitive. It's designed to connect you to people quickly and efficiently. It will easily alert people of your other account if you so much as log into the site on the same ip.
I had an account that was just so I could be an editor to a friends page and never used it, and I kept getting emails about "do you know these people." Kinda scared me cuz I didn't put any information about me in it but just cuz I had the 1 friend I kept finding all kinds of people I knew in those emails. Scared me more so when I started finding people in those emails that I acted in a play with when I lived at my grandmas for a winter. I mean that was 4 hours away and I never even messaged those people virtually in any way at all yet that darn site connected me to them somehow, apparently by knowing I was in a similar location with them for a few months.

last year when I started coming out to my friends I wanted to make a new facebook page for myself but I figured that there's no way it would be private enough, so instead I made a private group where I could post about my transition. In another few months when I come out publicly I'm gunna make the new facebook and then post a link on my old facebook and tell people to add me if they want and then I'm gunna delete my old one in a few days. I can't wait to take down my old one!

I ended up just changing my name and stuff on my regular page. I told everyone that it was time for a spring cleaning of my friend list. People could decide to stay or go. No clue if anyone left but I did get five more requests from people that I know.

Not sure when or what I'm going to do with facebook. Have already changed my name there to my initials and set my pronouns to gender neutral.
I've been working on a coming out post, but am leaning toward just changing my pronouns and my name once I've finished the legal change (filed the petition, waiting for a court date).
All the friends that would need to know already do, so would I just be telling those I never actually see in person.
