Title: Binders and MRI?
Post by: sigsi on February 17, 2018, 12:52:26 AM
Note: This is my first time starting a post, so apologies if it's in the wrong area.

In the next few weeks I have to get an MRI for a cyst on my face (scanning shoulders up). No metal (so I won't wear any with zippers), and they recommended wearing loose clothing. I'm already nervous and not wearing a binder will make things worse for my anxiety crap, so does anyone know how binders work with MRI machines and if they are allowed to be worn?

I have an Underworks "Ultimate Chest Binder Tank 997" if it makes a difference. Underworks says the material is nylon and spandex, but now I'm worried about possible hidden materials...? I'll check with the MRI people beforehand to make sure, but I just didn't know what to expect. Thanks again in advance.

Hi sigsi,

I've had lots of MRI's.

Metal is the major thing, the machine generates a very strong magnetic field so ANY metal on the body is an issue.  In my experience they routinely ask you to strip and put on a gown. I was allowed to keep knickers on as they were cotton but that was it.

They tend to be very cautious and go overboard as the consequences of even a small metal article can be a bit of a disaster.

The techs have always been very considerate and are great dealing with issues in private and helping you out.

Good Luck! Hope you are all healthy

Thanks for your quick reply and perspective Cindy.
Not overly thrilled with the idea of just a gown but at least underwear is good (didn't think about that before). I'm also glad the techs are usually nice, I'm not too comfortable around medical people as I had a few bad ones before, so that is quite reassuring.
Oh! I should have mentioned before that the MRI is just to see where my face nerves are so a cyst can be safely removed (so health wise, I should be fine).
Thanks again by a million (:

Update: The MRI was done and the surgery went perfect / everything is fine (they were able to let me layer scrub shirts to create a barrier). The info really helped a lot to calm my nervous (which was a big help as doctors have freaked me out for almost 10 years). If you see this, thanks again for your help Cindy. (:
