Title: What I learned about modern psychology and gender ID

My therapist told me today that she learned in college that if a person says they're male for example they're male regardless of how feminine or masculine they are and genitals. You and I already know that of course but I didn't realize they are already teaching that in psychology classes.

Hey,
As a psychology graduate with a 1st with an integrated masters this would probably need further probing. If she was talking about the nature vs nurture debate then only on the nature side would that be true as the nature side dictates we are developed through  genetics.
The thing about psychology is that nothing can ever be proven 100% and views are always adapting

The psychology field still has a big influence on our culture, which seems to be very progressive. It's wonderful. This lady is only 21, so she just now learned this stuff.

I'm sure that all of us on this forum believe that to be true, but of course in reality it is far more complicated.  As far as being taught that in college, it would (unfortunately) depend on which college, what professor, when, etc.  in other words, it is still not a universally held understanding.  Of course it is good that you are seeing a therapist who believes that.  No one should be counseling regarding gender issues who doesn't.  Good luck! :-) Nancy

Gertrude, I 100% agree, I'm merely stating what psychology teaches. Hence why I didn't talk about the nurture side in my comment

The most interesting part is that we live in a very conservative city ruled by fundamentalist Christians. The college she went to however is more liberal than the rest of the area.
