Title: UK meetup
Post by: Megan. on May 03, 2018, 03:18:37 AM
As there seems to be interest in running an event for all the UK members to meet up in person, I shall try my best to organise one [emoji5].
It will be held in Birmingham (UK) and will probably be in September.

To help me set a suitable date and venue; If you'd like to come,  can you please post your preferences for the following:

- public or private venue?
- on-site accommodation required?
- weekend or weekday?
- day time or evening... Or both!
- changing/dressing space required?

I'll do my best to accommodate people's needs. Any questions just post them here or PM me.

Many of us probably know other trans* people who are not Susan's members. I would ask that if they would like to attend,  that they join Susan's, and introduce themselves [emoji5].

Just a little history here. About two years ago, we had a trans meetup here in Ft Lauderdale.

When the venue was public very few people showed up, maybe 3 or 4. When we met at a private home, 12 or 13 people would show up. Some of the ladies needed a changing room, because they were not out to family or friends yet.

When the organizer became post-op, she went stealth and another lady tried to pick up the meeting. We had one meetup at a public place and only 3 of us showed up. Needless to say, the meetup folded shortly afterward.

Many of us then went to local support groups and we would go out to a local restaurant afterwards for a social hour.

Good luck with your meetup. One word of caution, if you meet in a private home, there are liability risks and clean up issues that must be considered.

Dani,  thanks for the heads up [emoji5].

I don't expect this to be any kind of regular thing. I know alot of our members are not out yet, so will ofc do my best to practically accommodate. There was a separate thread on locations of UK members and several suggested a meetup, figured I'd give it a go and see what the take up is like. X

Hey Megan

Birmingham is a great shout , there is the gay villiage and obviously are very trans friendly. So maybe look there ? I know there are several hotels close by that are too LGBT friendly. I'm sure there are plenty info on a well known search engine that sounds like boogle haha.

I wouldn't worry about it being like a public place. We will be like a gang of thugs when we are all together! We can bully the Cis people then 😈 haha
Am kidding really. But we would be fine :')

Public is fine for me.   Even when I try to hide in private at 6'5' tall someone can always see me anyway.

Only one request - Can we make it the back half of September as the first couple of weeks in Sept are usually chaos with kids going back to school.

Rachel Christina - Like your style.  CIS people watch out!111

Birmingham is cool, yeah the LGBT quarter is nice, saying that most of the centre is ok I've been out and about in Brum a fair bit now.

Time and date's aren't really an issue for me as long as I have decent notice as I work shifts so shouldn't be to hard to more them about. X

Depending on the dates you decide on, I might be able to join! I am planning on 3-4 weeks visiting the UK in Aug-Sept. I stay in Kent but can easily make it to Birmingham. It will be my first international trip as the real me, very excited.

I'm in Kent but Birmingham is an ideal central location and cheaper than London.
I'm up for a meet up if poss, I can then bombard all you girls for info :)

I fancy this - depends on dates but Birmingham would be fine.

and...

- public or private venue? Public - bars, clubs, shops and lots of muggles to scare :)
- on-site accommodation required? well a hotel nearby
- weekend or weekday? weekend preferably
- day time or evening... Or both! all
- changing/dressing space required? well I'd prefer a hotel room to the street :)

Yes, I need to get off my lazy ass. I found a possible venue, the 'Lost and Found' in Birmingham, apparently decorated with butterfly's and with private dining rooms for hire, a more attuned venue is hard to imagine! I'll try to give them a call in the next few days and find what their availability/prices are like. X

Hi Megan

What a great idea to have a meet up for us in the UK. I would love to have come along as I'm a kinda lone wolf and don't physically know anyone else who is transitioning so it would've been an excellent experience for me to get to meet other trans women who have gone through the emotions that i will face in the near future. Unfortunately I won't be able to make this meet up but hopefully it goes well and there could be others in the future.

Good luck with it and I hope that you all have a great time.

I'm not sure where you are based in the UK, but I'm a member of the Cambridge Diamonds TG group. They meet weekly at a pub in Cambridge, and were a good support for me earlier in my transition, though I go rarely these days. X

That's a good question!

The venue allows under 18s on the premises until 8pm in the evening.

If you're under 16, then I think it would be appropriate for you to have an adult accompanying you, they would be welcome to either have lunch with us (just reserve a second ticket), or stay in the public area of the venue.

Be aware that topics of conversation and language may be adult but should never be offensive.

PM me if you have any other questions[emoji5] X

All event details can be found at the Eventbright link.

Presentation is entirely open and how best you feel comfortable and are able to on the day. We are all at different stages in our journey.

I want this to be an open, inclusive, social event for anyone who identifies as being on the Trans* spectrum and who is a Susan's member. [emoji4]

Ok thanks Megan, you may want to change the picture on eventbrite you are using if you are password protection the location to avoid unsavories, it took a 2 second reverse image search to discern the venue.

The event location and time are also in the calendar links, the password is only required for attendance.

I don't expect any problems. I go to a regular support group in a pub without any issues.

This event is in a private room, at a lunchtime, but it's not too secret. If you have any specific concerns, please PM me and I'll try to address them. X

Hi Megan,

Unfortuntely it looks like  I'll be back n my house on the ocean in Australia by then, rather than my cottage in Devon, but I would like to be kept in the loop, and perhaps try to organise a get together myself in Devon on my next trip home to the cottage.
But I hope you all have a great time together.
Another idea for a meetup might be Pink Punters in Bletchley. The Campanile Hotel opposite is very Trans friendly.

A couple of us have been there and is a great night out.

I know this is not the subject here, but my beauty therapists in Sidmouth (also in Exmouth) in Devon are very Trans friendly. It's called Seabrease. Highly recommended for any girls locally or just visiting.as the therapists are really very nice and truly welcoming. The Sidmouth salon is situated right on the sea front overlooking the sea.

Hope you all enjoy the September meet-up
Best

Always up for lazy pootle down to Devon [emoji4].

I live quite near to Pink Punters, but I've not yet been there myself, I tend to prefer chatting in a pub or over a meal.

I've used several of the local salons where I live and in others places, I've never had any issue anywhere.

Enjoy Oz and catchup soon. X

I know we have posted together on a few threads before and I recall you spend several months a year in Prahran in Victoria in Australia and several months in Devon UK. Just wanted to properly say "hello". Enjoy your time in UK and then your time back in Victoria where it will be warmer  - spring there and autumn here.

Perhaps we will meet sometime next year. Meanwhile I look forward to your posst whether from Devon or Prahran.

There are three spaces left, so 15 of us (including myself) if everyone makes it.

I'm not averse to dresses and skirts, but I wear trousers 98% of the time. I'll likely be casual in the day, and maybe something a bit snazzier in the evening if people want to carry on the day.

Megan, would it be possible to make a list of those staying over and what hotels were in? Would be good to share that info between us (maybe pm's rather than posting on board)?

Hi was looking at Premier but as Im not out FT at the moment, and you cant get room till 2pm that is an issue for me, I was looking for somewhere to change if possible so I could come by train. Alternatively Ill come as me by car, park up 1/2 a mile away and walk across the most crowded part of Birmingham city centre on a clear warm day to the Lost and Found. Sounds like a bit of a challenge to me. Need to get my head around that one I think. Short pleated tartan red/black skirt and skinny black top (I'm not skinny or short)? or maybe tone it down a little... lol

All booked in for Lunch, not yet booked hotel but will be staying.  Will likely do the Premier Inn as I am looking forward to a night out.

Too early to decide on clothes - so much shopping time left !!!  I will undoubtedly rock a dress in the evening but will wait to see what the weather is like on the day.

I am not full time yet but am out to my wife (but not kids) and some of my family.  I will probably drive up from the south coast already dressed but will have to make sure the wife and kids are out to give me time to get ready.

Looking forward to meeting you all.

Nikki

Well I'm at Premier and will use their parking discount (if I can find it ) so maybe meet up at town hall carpark I think  and walk to Lost and found? If we are lucky we can pick up others from the station at the same time and go Feral/mob handed as a group in harmony, as we always do.

As I am on holiday in Slovenia at the time, I did not book onto this event but I hope to see many of you next year hopefully.

Yes it is interesting that in UK we have so many different accents - as for mine, well it is just a run of the mill normal northern accent!

Have a good time, all of you. Hugs

Hmm, May be interesting, as bred just south of Manchester, worked on Tyneside in shipyards on training before they closed and got a hard accent there - needed to, in order to go to the' Gordie Lad' pub (got a GF there -she told me not to talk at all... Entering the car park there was a warning in letters on the ground, very intimidating at the time) etc without getting into fights.. - That was the first city I went to that had double bouncers on the doors (early 1980s). Also first place I had a Kebab..
Universities in Coventry, Stoke and then Manchester (separate courses) and now in Derby for almost a couple of decades (I cook oatcakes but don't call people 'Duck' though), as most people I work with are Japanese. Polish, Indian, German, Swedish, Scottish, Welsh or French (where are the Americans and the English?), so don't have time to get a regional 'twang' anymore.

Lets see

After the lunch in the private room, we can restire to the public space at the venue for the afternoon.

Also what are we doing exactly - Pubs and meal, or pubs and club, or pubs meal and club (no particular order). Don't want to be too organised but has anyone any idea of good places to go. Sorry I need to set my 'head' scene a bit..

Hi Katie - try not to worry too much.  I'm in the same boat as you - I've never been out socially like this so it's going to be a bit of an adventure.  I'll have your back though - I'm sure we'll have a really good evening ☺️

I'm going to do the same as Megan - I'll be in jeans and a smart casual top during the day then probably change in to something a bit more dressy for the evening (probably a maxi dress or smart trousers and a blouse).  My left foot doesn't flex properly since a skiing accident so I'll most likely be in some sort of flats

I'm not typically one for clubbing,  and have never 'partied' as Megan, so it'll be a first for me too.

I don't want to dictate how the whole day runs, and I'm not a tour guide. If people want to dance the night away in a club that's an option, but so is finding a nice bar and enjoying some good music and cocktails.

OK thanks ladies, that sounds good, lets see what Kendra gets us doing... as long as she isn't in Birmingham Alabama.. as long as I can get back to hotel room (on my own maybe) and there aren't too many incriminating photo's then I am up for anything - have limited cash though so will look at club costs but I suppose a good meal and drinks before and after are like £50 - that $5000 to the yanks and that means their first round of drinks... or two...

(Pleading poverty.. lol)

So looking forwards to the next few weeks. SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Emma,

The venue details are in the EventBright infos - if you've not already requested a ticket, can you please do so [emoji3526]

https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/uk-meetup-tickets-46506787052

Quite a few attendees are booked into various different hotels (a few mentioned in this thread).

I'll be meeting a friend for dinner then coming out afterwards. I don't know Birmingham well but if the gay village is anything like Manchester's they'll be very accepting regardless.

However, if a few people are slightly nervous my experience is to find somewhere you know will be good and safe, and only move on if and when everyone is ready and comfortable. The Equator bar has a trans night a couple of times a month, and normally thats a good indicator of a very trans safe bar even when its not the trans night.

I found this as well for a run down on some of the bars: http://counteract.co/features/brum/the-best-bars-in-birminghams-gay-village/

Equator is mentioned as trans popular, but some of the others look good as well.

And the Menu looks amazing!

I contacted the local trans support group, they also recommended the Equator Bar, so we can have that as a good potential location if/when we move on from the Lost & Found.

Are we shopping or  chatting in the afternoon and what time to meet up where - are we going to the Nightingale Club or somewhere else (read the reviews, have your drinks before and apparently free entry before 12 - ill be lucky to make it to that time...)
Whatever has anyone been in touch with a local TG group for info? For those at the Premier Inn are we splitting taxi or breaking ankles walking,,,, etc etc.... ever the worrier..

Darn! And here I was thinking you were the Blond Bombshell on the right front. I'll have to correct my thinking.

Hi girls,

Again sorry I had to shoot were back from the hospital & my girl has half an egg on her forehead and a bad headache.

It was truly inspiring to meet you all today, I was beyond nervous but you were all fantastic.
Big thanks to Megan for sorting the room and meeting, Kendra for an amazingly generous gesture & Davina for the offer of sharing a room.

That was my first venture out but can't think of a better way to have done it.

Envious that your now all out terrorising the town and hope you have a great night xx

Hi all, just got back home from such a beautiful, memorable time. There is a little piece of every one of you in my heart now.
Putting the physical and mental personalities to the written words and the pictures was such an inspiring thing to be able to do.
You are all lovely and gorgeous people and I will look back on the time with such fond memories, with a longing for another chance to be with you all again.
Personally I have listened and taken heed of what was discussed on so many topics and quite a few steps forward have been taken for me, and I know, for others as well.
As others have posted I can't thank Megan enough for organising this, or for Kendra's generosity (and just for being Kendra), and for everyone's personal effort to make this event a success.
Well done everyone..

Luv n Hugz (and I mean it)

Katie

Oh, forgot to say, Davina made me a necklace stand with compartments for studs (when I get ears pierced) - so here it is  and it works really well for necklaces and bangles.

Hi Girls

I just got back home and would like to thank you all for a lovely weekend.  I'm sorry I got there so late yesterday as I didn't get a chance to talk with everyone - still there's always next time!  You all looked amazing and it was very special being able to share in those first steps that some of you were taking

Big thanks to Kendra for her generous gesture yesterday and to Megan of course for going that extra mile organising a brilliant event

Still smiling & thinking of you all

Charlotte x

This was filled with moments and experiences I am already looking back at fondly and I'm not even home yet.  The time together was precious.

Someone mentioned the distance must have caused me to hesitate.  When I think about my first few ventures into public and across town as myself, I firmly believe many in the room traveled a greater distance than I did.  Journeys are not always measured in miles or kilometres.

This made me smile. Was one small train journey, but one giant leep for Jo-kind ;p

So sorry that Devlyn and I had to skip the evening, I had some family issues that took  priority.

It was truly wonderful to meet everyone, and I'm sad I didn't get more time to talk with everyone; it was a great crowd.

A big thank you to (naughty) Kendra for her generosity!

I'll pass the mantel on to someone else to organise the next one. [emoji4]

T'was lovely to see the picture and read this thread, following it to it's finale. Now some of you know the joy in part of what I experience when I wander around the USA meet friends in the flesh that I had only met online. It is truly special when this can be done either in groups or as individuals. I hope many of you get the bug like I have, and keep hugging our members in person when ever possible.

Hugs,
  Laurie

If Manchester is chosen as a venue I don't mind doing a bit of legwork living close to it. Otherwise, if somewhere else is chosen (Brighton, London etc) I'll leave to someone more local, but I'll definitely still be "up fer it"

Thank you all so much for making such a very special and wonderful day.  Huge huge thanks to Megan for her organisational abilities (yes paper does help!) and Kendra for her mind blowing generosity and infectious attitude towards life.

All of you are a true inspiration and I enjoyed talking to you for every minute! I'm just sad that I did not get chance to speak to all of you personally, but the conversations I did have were wonderful, and yes I'm including you Davina in that! Even if we did end up talking about cars and drag racing!  ;D ;D ;D

It was a first for me as well, as although I was very low key, it was the first time I have been out in public in 100% female attire (even if it was jeans and t-shirt and probably not that obvious).

Although I was as nervous as hell, I enjoyed the experience immensely and every one of you has inspired me in some way as although we are kinda following a similar path we are all so very different

Thank you. xx

If you're happy to take charge, then you can choose the location (perks of the organiser). Manchester has good transport links, so I'm sure it would work as well as anywhere.

If you're up for it, then I'd suggest spinning up a new thread for it. X
