Undisciplined drinking is foolish. A glass of red wine with a good balanced meal is very healthy.

a night on the town once in a while is about my best therapy  :D

It's nice while it lasts. I just hate the after-math.

Nothing a good fry up cant cure though

Drinking itself isn't bad provided it's done in moderation and not habitually...

hum...then again...of the few times I've gotten completely wasted...they have been a precursor to suicide attempts...hum...I guess in that sense drinking is bad...

Peace and love,
Izzy

I do not get hungover, no matter how much I drink or what I drink.

MOF, I did 13-16 shots in a short period of time and followed them with a 32oz rum and coke. I felt good for the rest of the night. The next AM came really early as I had to register for an event. While standing in line @ 0730 (had gotten in around 0300) a guy comes up and says, "I'm surprised you're standing." I looked at him and flashed a very mean look because I had no clue who he was. He quickly followed up with, "I was standing behind you at the bar last night, that was pretty impressive." I had to laugh and gave him a smile. Surprised he recognised me since I had my goth thing going on, complete with a very tight leather corset. I even got a foot massage that night... from a Dominant. :)

It's a paradox but alcohol is a depressant yet many depressed people drink to excess.  It can also remove social inhibitions like the societal taboo on suicide.  Lots of suicide attempts are preceeded by heavy drinking.  So the moral of the story is; if you're depressed, don't drink, see the shrink!

Seriously, the right anti-depressant or therapy can work wonders.

I have tried anti-depressants a number of times...but each time I became flat emotionally and lost my creativity...so I always end up just stopping the drugs. I am the creative sort and to me being emotionally flat is akin to death...actually death would be preferable to loosing my creativity in my opinion. My doctor's no longer even try to prescribe any of those types of meds because they know I won't keep taking them for any length of time...

Luckily those around me know that I usually get really drunk prior to my suicide attempts...so they always keep a close eye on me when I start drinking. If I'm going to even get a drink lately I need to let everyone know that I'm OK...I'm not suicidal right now...it's OK...otherwise everyone freaks...

I have a great therapist...but having been out of work for 9-months money isn't tight it's non-existent! Luckily she's been seeing me once or twice a month pro bono, but there is only so much that can be done with 1 to 2 hours of therapy a month...

I'll be fine...honest, but thanks for the comments.

Peace and love,
Izzy

I've sufferred with recurrant major depression since adolescence.  Each episode a little worse than the next.  I've tried most of the major anti-depressants  and like you found they left me emotionally flat.  That's not acceptable to me either.  I have found one that works for me.  Wellbutrin actually has a stimulating effect on me and I can accomplish more in a day than I could without.  I can feel the whole range of emotions.  I still get sad sometimes but I don't stay sad.  I'll shed some tears then move on rather than having it fester inside me.  Therapy in conjunction with meds has really helped me overcome my fears.  Heck, I finally got the courage to transition!

Drinking alcohol does tremendous damage to the body. Over time alcohol kills every organ in the body.

Well the same thing can be said about age, yeah? I would much rather go, having a great time, at 50 than to live to a "safe" 80. Take it from someone who is years beyond the time given to her by the docs, life is short no matter what and you might as well have a good time. That is not to say that you should just go and do whatever you please but it does mean that you should at least try and have a good go at things while you are able. I am not some party obsessed person who goes out clubbing every night but I do get out and I refuse to stay behind the four walls that seem to define so many people.

If you think drinking is bad for you, don't do it.  If you think that drinking too much is bad for you, don't drink that much.

Only if you drink in excess, and like more than moderately.  Needless to say, a little fun once in a while with some alcohol normally doesn't hurt anyone if you're smart about it :D

And even if it does hurt you a little bit, so what?   I get tired of the whole nanny state deal trying to get everyone into everyone else's business.  If you think its bad for you, then don't do it.  Otherwise, move down a bit and make some room at the bar, as Ingrid Bergman says in Notorious, "The important drinking hasn't started yet!"

Ironically, alcohol has the opposite affect on me and makes me manic (I'm bipolar).

Are you advocating binge drinking? This type of drinking combined with HRT is like playing Russian Roulette with your body. In fact, it is Russian Roulette without HRT. Alcoholism is a progressive disease. It sometimes progresses slowly. Myself, I don't have a problem with booze and get a headache if I drink more then two drinks. Anyone who does the kind of drinking described above and feels good about it likely has a problem.

I'll have a 1/4 glass of red wine after a good dinner maybe twice a month. Otherwise I won't touch the stuff. Even that much makes me feel "buzzed" which I don't particularly enjoy... it makes me feel "ugly" somehow. Contaminated. Fake. Probably because most of my relatives are alcoholics, and I NEVER want to be like that.

In other words, you  can't go out and have a good time without getting drunk. You can do what you want with your body but when one does this type of drinking, they present a danger to others as well as to themselves.

Perhaps the title should have been more in line with the subject then.  But using the word "bad" is an instant values discussion.

I drink occassionally, once I get tipsy I become really hyper and sociable. I find it fun to drink a bit sometimes (only every 2 or 3 weeks).
However, drinking to excess definitely is bad.

All things in moderation.

alcohol has long-term negative effects on the body,  especially the liver. why drink? are you trying to fit in the crowd or forget?  also remember that if you're drinking beer youre going to get a beer belly and that is a turn off for girls. forget the drinking and employ your time doing something that you enjoy without compromising your health.

Quoteif you're drinking beer youre going to get a beer belly

No more than if you drink the same amount of sugary soft drinks.

I don't drink anything like enough alcohol to do any serious damage, or develop a beer belly. Drinking is an ocassional treat for me, because I like it. It's got nothing to do with fitting in, seeing as a lot of my friends don't drink.
