The only thing stopping me from starting my transition is not having health insurance. It's available through my work, but I don't see myself staying there for as long as my transition will take. How did you ladies get started? What kind of coverage do you have? What affordable options would you suggest?

If insurance is available, take it. You'll be able to carry it over (COBRA) until your next job. There is no cheaper way than having things covered by insurance. Good luck!

I would recommend you take it because you just never know. I recently found out, by sheer luck, that Kaiser Permanente in Georgia has a program for transgender females and males. From what one of the directors of the program told me, it is there to provide the necessary components for a healthy transition (includes continuous blood work monitoring, prescriptions, mental health, urology, and if the patient wants it - bottom surgery performed from a list of surgeons). In Georgia, ffs or breast augmentation is not covered. This coverage is not mentioned on their website -- you have to ask.

Surgeries and hormones are wonderful contributions medical science has made to the treatment of Gender Dysphoria, but people have lived as another gender over the history of mankind without them. The biggest hurdle to beginning transition is ourself.
