Title: Help, scotchguard or similar protection for shoes?

I bought a pair of tan/white tennis shoes that appear to be mostly nubuck. I didn't think anything of it until, after proudly displaying them to my mother (and she really liked them), she suggested that I scotchguard them.
I've never really cared about my shoes until recently, so I have no experience with protection/cleaning products. I could use any advice or product suggestions, really.
I'd also like to do something for my leather boots. A coworker recommended just taking them to a professional cobbler and having them clean and shine them, but I imagine there's ways of further protecting them too.

Use Scotchgard for the cloth shoes. Use mink oil for the leather ones.
