Title: Struggling to find a trans friendly PCP

My therapist advised me to seek out a trans friendly PCP so I can get things started for some simple transition steps (hair removal to start with), I may want to explore more in the future (hrt maybe...) depending on how things go. My insurance covers 100% of trans stuff because my employer is awesome, so I'd like to use it.
I called the healthcare company, called the insurance provider, and all I got was a list of out of network doctors (2 in a moi blue city of over 2M people) and a list of alternative medicine doctors (yea thanks but no) respectively.
Side note, I've never been too bothered by "he" and "sir", maybe a twinge here or there, mostly I just get happy about the accidental "she" I get from behind. This time getting "sir"ed on the phone felt like a ton of bricks... that's new.
How did you go about finding a PCP to work with without being someone's training wheels? Am I down to calling random doctors offices and seeking out trans co-workers (I'm very not out at work)?

Have you tried LGBT websites? They often list resources for the area, including LGBT-friendly doctors. Your therapist might have a reference as well.

It is not an easy task. When I started raising the topic with my regular PCP, he more or less lost the very little bedside manners he had. I never really got along with him. I ended up calling the office manager and telling him that I want a different doctor in the practice. Now I found a very lovely and compassionate doctor in the same practice (they are only 3 walking minutes from my house, so I wanted to keep them...) My new doctor also admits that she has no idea about my hormones, so she leaves that to my OB/GYN to handle...
You mentioned an area of almost 2M people, I am wondering if there are trans support groups you could reach out to for recommendations. I am surprised that there are only 2 doctors in your network in such a densely populated area.

I know the Ingersoll Gender Center in Seattle has a medical partner that will recommend HRt and supply medications. It's mostly on an ability to pay program. Rainbow Center in Tacoma also has recommendations. Perhaps your local support groups do too. Here is a list of major medical providers and their policies.

Also try looking a Rad Remedy ( http://radremedy.org/ ) for your area.
