Title: How do I keep from being
Post by: Jenny1969 on November 24, 2018, 02:08:24 PM
How do I keep from being labeled as MPD, multiple personality disorder?   When I am in male mode I act differently than when I am in female mode. I refer to Jenny when speaking about her/me?  Should I avoid trying to differentiate between the two?

Maybe I'm over thinking this.  Just wanting my first assessment for HRT to go well.

Maybe if you made little "air quotes" with your fingers for now when you mention "Jenny?"

(See what I did there?)

If you don't have DID (the modern term for MPD), then you don't have to worry about being diagnosed with it.  As for amateur psychologists, don't worry about them.

When I refer to Kathy and "my old self" as though they were two different people, that is just a convenient verbal shorthand.  Certainly none of us here will think it is anything else, and neither will anyone who knows you and cares about you.  You can't talk about this stuff without referring to the male and female aspects separately.

So don't worry about it.

I wouldn't worry about it. Therapists know the differences. I used to be Leonard, he is almost gone. I am Laurie.  MeanRotten is a frequent, and unwanted visitor who is sometimes very difficult to banish back into the shadows where he haunts me continually. He comes to visit for the holidays every year and will not leave until they are over. See? I am completely normal whatever that is.

I used air quotes a lot during my early gender therapist appointments. Not in the context of the different me's, but they were still very useful for getting across that I was self-aware when I was using a word in an unusual way.

Anyway, as mentioned above, if you are being assessed by someone who knows their stuff, they will completely get it and understand that fact that early on, you have to live double life just to survive.

Good luck.

I personally feel that the default diagnoses for transgendered people is DID and I don't know why.  One of the main characteristics is that someone will not remember what goes on when the other personality takes control. Some doctors have decided to diagnose transgendered people as having DID because they can't diagnose them as transgendered. That is what doctors did to me.  One of the main characteristics is that someone will not remember what goes on when the other personality takes control. Oh well.

I suppose that it's probably every pdoc's duty to make a good faith evaluation of whether or not a patient is showing signs of DID when they suddenly announce a new persona, or when they walk in off the street disclosing one.

I've worked with mine for years, and she did it - for about fifteen seconds, until I glared at her and told her to knock it off and that I wasn't dissociating, but rather I was discussing the person I planned to become.

She got it from that point forward.

I'm Paul as I've always been Paul, but I'm not actually Paul, I'm Katie. Paul isn't a separate being, Paul is my entire life but I'm not Paul, I'm Katie.
Is Paul different from Katie? At first I thought so, like Katie was a being encroaching on Paul but that's not true. I'm both Paul and Katie although I AM Katie not Paul.

Im made myself confused haha so I hope that makes sense
