Summary:
ICE and the private prison used to hold Hernández Rodriguez before her death severely physically abused her, after she had fled thousands of miles to escape torture and death in her homeland.

The Transgender Law Center ordered an independent autopsy. They added that Hernandez died from dehydration.

"Roxsana was shackled for a long time and very tightly, enough to cause deep bruising on her wrists," said Lynly Egyes, director of litigation for the Transgender Law Center. "She had deep bruising injuries consistent with physical abuse with a baton."

The Transgender Law Center announced Monday a wrongful death lawsuit against the State of New Mexico. Egyes added that Hernandez's death could have been prevented.

From the article:
"[Sperry's autopsy] found evidence of physical abuse, with "deep bruising" on her hands and abdomen, evidence of blunt-force trauma "indicative of blows, and/or kicks, and possible strikes with blunt object." An accompanying diagram illustrated long, thin bruises along Hernández Rodriguez's back and sides, as well as extensive hemorrhaging on Hernández Rodriguez's right and left wrists, which Dr. Sperry found were "typical of handcuff injuries.""
