Title: Nostril hairs
Post by: KathyLauren on November 27, 2018, 07:44:09 AM
My electrologist wants to try zapping some nostril hairs today.  Knowing how sensitive the upper lip is just below the nostrils, I am expecting that she is going to have to scrape me off the ceiling. :o  I'll bring extra tissues, because I know that I'll be crying.

Anyone had this area done?  It is probably too late to ask for tips, since my appointment is in 4 hours.

I'll report back how it was.

I had some done during my session where my electrocutioner arranged a shot of novocaine that numbed the entire upper lip.  Didn't feel a thing.  The shot was possible because the dentist that administered it is in the same building.

Oh Kathy! I can't even imagine that. It makes my eyes water and sneeze just plucking them. I hope the dentist is bringing a healthy dose of Novocaine?

Good luck!

Well, surprisingly, it was considerably less painful than the upper lip!

Because you can't cover the nostrils, I re-applied the Emla three times in the hour before my appointment.  Although I felt a few of the zaps, most were quite painless.  The most discomfort was from breathing through my mouth while she was bending and pinching my nose every which way.

I get to do it all over again next week.  I have to admit, it will be nice to get rid of those hairs!

@KathyLauren
Dear Kathy:
Yes indeed, I agree with the comment reply from @Donica
ouchi, it make my eyes water just reading your experience that you described.

Fortunately I do not (yet) have "protruding" nostril hairs but I know that my dad has more hair coming out of his ears and his nose than he has on his head !!!    He would always tell me that getting older is not for sissies.
I am hoping that I did not get those particular genes of his passed down to me....   so far I do not have any thinning hair on my head... he had told me that he started going bald in his late 20's  ....   I am 38, so perhaps I dodged that bullet.

Hugs,
Danielle

Well, all that stuff - hair migrating from the scalp to the nostrils - is driven by T.  So HRT should ensure that that bullet is a blank for you.

Too late for me, unfortunately.  The hair on my head is gone, and the hairs in my nostrils are awake, so I just have to deal with them.

I was pleasantly surprised at today's experience.

Dear Kathy:
Yes, that is what I am thinking as well, by getting my T reduced I am hoping that the male pattern baldness now will not strike me.

I am so glad the experience for you today was pleasantly surprising... you stated that there is another session for next week... are there any follow up sessions after that?

Thank you for keeping us all up to date.
Hugs and well wishes,
Danielle

Kathy, that's good to hear!

Often the fear of how bad something may be, is much worse than the eventuality. (Or so my gender therapist keeps telling me.)

On my first Laser visit for facial hair it hurt way more than I was expecting. At the end, the technician asked, "Do you want the nostrils done too?"

At that point I had had more than enough, and I couldn't blurt out "NO!" fast enough.

Maybe I should have said yes. Right now, I just use a pair of tiny nose scissors from Daiso.

I did not even realize that the nose and ear hair is another thing we (or only I???) intersex people have no problem with!

We have all that hair, that you have growing out of your noses and ears, simply growing on top of our head, and thus, we have no receding hairlines or bald spots up there!    >:-) >:-) >:-)

We shall see!  Likely, she will let the area rest for a while to see what, if anything, re-grows there.

Indeed it is.  Fear is a funny thing.  Without it, we'd be dead.  Yet, by its very nature, it is pessimistic.  I am learning to approach my fears, at least the transition-related ones, rather than running away from them.

I am also learning to trust people.  My electrologist, in particular, is very good about not giving my more than I can handle.  She checks in with me frequently during a session to make sure I am still okay.  She anticipates which areas are likely to be more painful, and asks how the first zap in such an area was before carrying on.  When she does the painful areas, like my upper lip, she works for 15 minutes only, then moves on to other areas, because she is aware of how quickly the numbing cream wears off.  And she has given me detailed instructions on pain management, in particular how to apply the Emla cream and how to cover it up for maximum effect.

The result of her skillful care is that I trust her judgement on how much pain I can tolerate.  When she said she wanted to do my nostrils, I was a bit scared, but I prepared the way she told me to, trusting that she knew it would be okay.  And it was fine.

Wow that just sounds  like so much ouch.

That was one area I never thought about doing, percieved pain being the main reason.  Might be nice to have a few of them zapped though.

Go for it!  It was not nearly as bad as I expected.  In fact, most of the zaps were entirely painless, 100% numbed.

And it beats the heck out of trying to clip them with scissors!

I can't imagine. I just pull one out and I'm in tears.

I usually pluck them. But I have a trimmer with a nostril hair attachment for when I can't stand the plucking. It also has attachments for ears and eyebrows.

So do I. Those attachments are a must have.

I pluck and/or trim with scissors but have been considering electrolysis. Might look into this a bit more now.
