Title: Will transitioning nulify my 30 year marraige?

I just had a random thought the other day and cant seem to find a good answer.  I'm a trans woman and have been married to my cisgender wife for 30 years.  Once I am at the point that I can change the birth marker on my State and Federal identifications as well as my birth certificate will that may my marriage license/certificate invalid.  I mean at that point we will be two women living together is a state that does not recognize same sex marriage. (assuming of course that she sticks around) 

I'm seriously over thinking this I know.

Wouldn't think nullify would be an option.

That's unfortunate if it does; I can't say I'm versed in marriage law.  I'm lucky to live in Oregon where me and my girl are legal no matter what happens  ;D

I'd encourage you to not let that slow you down.  Even if it nullifies the paper contract, you and your wife can still live happily together.  I hope she sticks around!  30 years is a lot to toss out the window over a little thing like gender.

Do you live outside the U.S.? If you don't, then same-sex marriage is legal nationwide - and even if that ruling isn't applied retroactively precedence still appears to show that transition of one of the partners does NOT nullify a marriage.

Even if the law does not allow a marriage to be nullified, be prepared for a divorce. Only a few of us have accepting spouses.

In New South Wales, Australia, the law used to mean the marriage was no longer valid after a legal transition with a change in the gender marker. But (thankfully) the law changed and now transitioning does not affect the legality of the union.

You are right, my marriage collapsed after almost 36 years!
