Title: Criticism needed: 8 months post-op voice
Post by: Ruchi on February 16, 2024, 09:56:51 PM
I had glottoplasty back in June 2023 and wanted an opinion on my current voice, whether it sounds like a woman or not. I feel it isn't really passing and may get another surgery but I really don't want to take any unneeded risks...

...there's a soundcloud recording of my voice.

@Ruchi
Dear Ruchi:
Your MTF voice sounds amazingly feminine...  In my humble opinion
I don't think that you need to consider another surgery.
Your voice certainly sounds like a woman. 100% female !!!! :)  :icon_chick:

Your voice sounds fine. More surgery might cause irreversible damage to an already passable voice.

So, it's 174 in the recording but it's sub-165hz on a majority of days. I just don't feel comfortable with myself having a pitch this deep, and it sucks cause I feel almost the same as I did before I got the Glottoplasty. I really just wanna live my life and not spend the rest of it recovering from stupid surgeries, but my hand is forced and it looks like I'm getting a revision.

This sucks. Especially cause my pre-op voice was in the 130-140hz range. I never imagined I would need 40% of my vocal chords removed just to get to the low-end of what I'd be comfortable with.

Edit: I wasn't feeling well when I posted this! I think I'm mostly comfortable with my voice, but there are days I really don't feel well about it. So it can be tough sometimes. I'm really not sure it's even worth the risk of getting a revision.

Hi, your voice sounds very good and you are in the female range. Intonation, nasal speaking and word choice are very important factors in feminine voice.

I had a cricoid thyroid subluxation and I went from 130 hz to 170. Then I had a glottoplasty that was done wrong. The web was 80 % and in the middle of the vocal folds. I had virtually no voice and difficulty getting enough air when hiking and exercising. I then had femlar with Dr. Thomas. I am 235 HZ, I can get plenty of air.

About a month ago I had my vocal folds scanned at Penn and meet with a laryngologist (trans specialty) and a speech pathologist. My vocal folds post Femlar had some overgrowth of one vocal fold. It was from the glottoplasty. I had laser tuning with Dr. Thomas. I want to have my vocal folds evaluated and not fly to Portland Oregon ( I am in Philly).

I had my vocal folds evaluated and they look awesome. The larentolgist said I have a nice female voice.  However, one vocal fold is a little out of sink with the other and it causes some vocal fry. My HZ is 235. The Speech pathologist had a conversation with me then she did the evaluation with recording. She said I have wonderful intonation and word choice and my HZ is 235, well in the female range especially for my age. She said she is 190 HZ. She also said many woman would love to have the vocal fry I have. She also said to not intake caffeine and drink 40 OZ water daily and add 20 Oz for each caffeinated beverage. Femlar causes 100% nasal speaking which tickled my nose when I first started talking.

I had trained with a trans specialist speech pathologist for a year.

I wanted the evaluation because I have no real feedback from independent  trained sources. I am happy with my voice and really wish I did not have a bad experience with the glottoplasty. It worked out in the end.

Surgery isn't always the answer. You seem to be like me and a bit self-critical. I am always harder on myself than on others. Something I learned is that it is not all about your vocal cords. There is training involved to help you learn to use your warmer voice. Check out this YouTube and try some of these exercises. See if that helps you hear what we hear. Go easy on yourself. You are fine!  ;D
