Title: Do you shop at Dollar Stores?
Post by: ChrissyRyan on December 30, 2024, 02:00:11 PM
Do you shop at Dollar Stores?

Someone old told me these used to be called 5 & 10s or Dime Stores.  They mentioned names such as Woolworth's and G. C. Murphy.  Maybe they are still around somewhere.

I wonder if they should be called $1.50 to $7 Stores as many items you just cannot buy for a dollar there nowadays.

Except for some lipstick and other basic makeup, plus a few other things.

I noticed that some items are actually cheaper at Wal Mart, at least on a portion size or package contents size basis.  That is, cheaper per ounce at a big box department store like Wal Mart.

In Canada the dollar store has some decent items. But yeah I remember the 5 and dime stores.

Growing up, we had Woolworth's and Ben Franklin's. Woolworth's had a "soda fountain," which was just a small diner in the store with bar stools at the counter.

I shop at Dollar Tree for consumables, such as paper products like napkins, paper towels, and toilet paper. They have a spray cleaner called "Awesome" that cleans everything very well. The person who told me about it cleans houses for a living. It works and it's cheap.

I am leary of buying makeup and hygiene items there. It is cheap for a reason. Not all imports are good for you, so I also don't buy food items there. Anything that doesn't go in or on my body might be okay though.

We all need to be wise consumers, that is for sure.

We have Dollar General now. I remember the Woolworths with the lunch counter though. And the Ben Franklin.

I have seen Dollar Tree stores and the Family Dollar stores.

Dollar General also.  The latter seems to be more often found in smaller towns.

Lots of times many stores have boxes everywhere which makes me think they have a labor issue, that is, not having enough labor to make stores better kept up.  Of course, it does not help that shoppers leave unwanted items wherever they choose.

What irks me is seeing fresh meat left on shelves at Wal Mart, this can lead it to go bad. Unless it can be determined the food is safe to eat, it has to be thrown out.
