Title: Is a (USA) hot dog a sandwich?
Post by: ChrissyRyan on January 13, 2025, 01:26:16 PM
Is a (USA) hot dog a sandwich?

In the USA it is served with a hot dog bun that is split open from the top but the bun is still connected at its bottom.

In some parts of Europe it may be served differently I hear.

No a sandwich  is 2 slices of bread with  a  filling. The traditional  hot dog is eaten in a bread finger or long bun. It is possible  to  have hot dogs between  2 slices of  bread though!

The hotdog bun is similar to a sub bun but I have never really considered a hotdog a sandwich.

But man now I want hotdogs.

Any more votes on this matter?  Is a hot dog a sandwich or is it not?

No. It is not served between bread. It is served on a bun.

In the same way, a hamburger is not a sandwich.  ;D

Would food served in a hoagie roll be a sandwich?

Lori,

So a beef patty served in between a split bun is a burger is not a sandwich, but the same meat served between two slices of bread is a sandwich?

Yes!

Ironically, I ordered a roast beef sandwich in Germany. I expected to be able to pick it up and eat it with my hands. Nope. It was served "open face," which I do not consider a sandwich. It is missing half of the bread!

In the Army, they served us SOS (S*** On a Shingle) for breakfast. It is basically creamed meat over a slice of bread. Nobody ever called it an open-face sandwich.

I can't handle all this controversy.  ;D

Did the creamed meat over a slice of bread taste good?

How long did they give you to eat?

Did they have the practice of "Eat all you want, but eat all that you take"?

Could you ask for a double helping the first time you get food or did you have to show you ate all of the first helping first?

Yes, but I rarely had time.

We had an hour, but my duties had me busy enough that I only took a half hour. As the Operations Sergeant, I coordinated our unit's training and the "experiments" we did while testing new weapons systems. Very often, I worked 14-hour days for months at a time.

No. And it was a good thing, too. Sometimes what they served was crap didn't suit my tastebuds, so it got dumped in the trash. Mostly, people knew what they liked and what to avoid, so they would get the good stuff and skip the rest. We were always well fed on one trip through the line.

No, a taco is not a hot dog.  It is also not a sandwich.

The debate is not over, some people do think that a hot dog is a sandwich.
More apparently do NOT believe it is a sandwich.

What say you?

So far, going by the poll results, more people think a hot dog is NOT a sandwich than it being a sandwich.

There is an Oscar Meyer hot dog mobile (vehicle) at the Henry Ford Museum.

IMHO ... Meat, egg salad, peanut butter/jelly, etc. on or in between bread is by definition a sandwich.   Hamburgers and Hotdogs included.

Technically a hot dog may indeed be a sandwich.

With that said, the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council considers a hot dog to be a unique food category and not a sandwich.

Merriam Webster says that only one slice of bread is necessary if it is covered by food.
You could also have two or more slices of bread with food (filling) in between, or a split roll with food in between.

Hence the "open faced sandwich" if there is only one slice of bread?

There are two age old questions in this world that will never be answered to everyone's satisfaction.

1. Is a hot dog a sandwich?
2. Is Die Hard a Christmas movie?

I do have the answer to both BTW.  And I'm right.  Just saying.😉

1) There's a saying in the UK, "if it fit's in the bread it's a sandwich" Hot dog is a sandwich by any definition.
2) Of course Die Hard is a christmas movie. One of the best, second only to Bad Santa.

Technically a hot dog may be a sandwich.  But few think of a hot dog as a sandwich, but a food of its own.

I wonder how many would be eaten after viewing how the basic hot dogs are made.

Check out Fat Man (Mel Gibson).
To stay on topic, I will note that no hot dogs are consumed in the movie. But lots of cookies and sugar, because... elf food.
