LGBTQ+ youth flee hateful states: 266,000 young people have moved to more inclusive states

Story by Greg Owen (27 Jan 2025)

A new study published by the Trevor Project and the Movement Advancement Project (MAP) finds a clear association between states' LGBTQ+ policy and the health and well-being of LGBTQ+ youth living in them.

The link was most starkly revealed in the number of LGBTQ+ youth who had moved out of states with what they considered a negative political environment: 266,000 LGBTQ+ youth aged 13 to 24 relocated to more inclusive parts of the country, the study found.

The study found that 20% of LGBTQ+ youth lived in a state with a low overall LGBTQ+ policy index, 7% in fair, 8% in medium, and 38% in states with a high LGBTQ+ policy index. LGBTQ+ young people's consideration and decision to leave a state varied by the policy environment they lived in.

That effect was particularly pronounced among transgender and nonbinary youth living in a state with a negative policy index, evidenced by nearly seven in ten (68%) having considered moving to another state, and nearly one in five (18%) having left their state to access healthcare.

Study author Steven Hobaica, a research scientist for the Trevor Project, called it "heartbreaking to see that nearly half of transgender and nonbinary youth have considered moving due to anti-LGBTQ+ policies."

I feel sad for the younger people today. They are really getting tossed around. This is definitely not the time to have to move,It's pretty expensive out there.
I'm also thinking of moving due to changes in the city I live in.

Wish them all well

I am planning to move out of state too.

I have my passport and now just waiting to see how my finances might change this year. Depending on how things work out, I may move across the border from South Dakota to Minnesota. Then possibly spend a month or ten in Thailand to get surgeries.

For now, it is just waiting and watching.

I was also thinking about Minn. I'm right next door so it would be rather painless. Moving by yourself to a new place can be fun, uplifting, and dangerous to do by yourself.I think that's what is holding me back. I know I want to get out of WI though.so boring here.

Dst

did i see skipe/call?

I moved here alone to get away from family.  ;D
I lived in Northern Illinois for over 25 years. Did a lot of jobs in Southern WI.

I see there is a Skype field in the profile, but I don't know if it is functional. I think everyone Zooms nowadays. Skype is SO yesterday. LOL

As a math nerd, I am frustrated by the lack of competent reporting of this study.  The 266,000 figure is meaningless.  Is that 266,000 since the Inauguration?  Last month?  In all of 2024?  Some other year?  In the last 25 years?  Some friggin' context would be nice.

Not the fault of members here.  The problem is lack of competent reporting in the media, and that begins with the Trevor Project's own media officers.

Statistics can be twisted to mean anything, even the opposite of what they represent. Context really is important.

From Wikipedia:

"Lies, damned lies, and statistics" is a phrase describing the persuasive power of statistics to bolster weak arguments, "one of the best, and best-known" critiques of applied statistics. It is also sometimes colloquially used to doubt statistics used to prove an opponent's point.

The phrase was popularized in the United States by Mark Twain (among others), who attributed it to the British prime minister Benjamin Disraeli. However, the phrase is not found in any of Disraeli's works and the earliest known appearances were years after his death. Several other people have been listed as originators of the quote, and it is often attributed to Twain himself.

80.73% of all statistics are just made up.  ;D

It would have been interesting to see the data by age.

I agree.

Older teenagers may have moved on their own. But ages younger than 16 most likely moved with a parent or guardian.

I hope the underage kids (younger than 18) did move with their parents.

I think about moving quite a bit  Across to Minnesota, maybe Moorhead. Maybe out to California.I don't have an occupation where it's that simple.
