Story by Abby Monteil (11 Feb 2025)
Egale Canada, one of Canada's largest LGBTQ+ organizations, has announced that it will not attend any in-person U.S. events for the foreseeable future in response to the Trump administration's anti-LGBTQ+ policies, including key gatherings at the United Nations and the forthcoming World Pride celebration.
In a February 6 statement shared to Egale's website, the group explained that it had previously been registered to attend the 69th annual Commission on the Status of Women at the New York-based U.N. Headquarters from March 10 to 21. However, the organization ultimately decided against attending the commission as it has in the past, as well as any other global events based within the U.S. This includes the 50th annual World Pride, a series of international LGBTQ+ Pride events that will be held this year in Washington, D.C.
"This decision is foremost based on the need to safeguard our trans and nonbinary staff who would face questionable treatment at land and aviation borders to attend such convenings, and to stand in solidarity with global colleagues who are experiencing similar fear around entry to the U.S.," the statement reads.
"We cannot in good conscience engage in a process of disentangling our organization from U.S. goods and services... and then proceed to travel to the U.S.," Egale's statement continued.

I live 10 min from the US and I don't know if I will ever willingly go back. Unfortunately I think it will take decades to recover from Trump's changes. I honestly just don't feel safe going back

I haven't felt it was safe to travel to the US since I came out, around the beginning of the first Trump presidency. I doubt if it will ever be safe in my lifetime.

After I got my new passport in I started to go to the US to head to walmart and to get gas maybe stopping off at a couple more stores and it was a lovely experience. It's not that I expect even most average people to suddenly jump out and shoot my in the back but it only takes 1 gravy seal to take issue with me to make my day a bad one.

Assuming they don't get to push their Hitlerization plans to let the dude run again... after a few years this will all calm down and he can live in peace, being crap at golf and thinking he changed the world. Just be patient :)

It's not him himself that's the problem, it's everything he cuts such as the board of education. Also the judges he appoints are going to take decades to remove and that is if a right wing fundamentalist doesn't get elected in the mean time. Everything he eliminates the Republican party will fight tooth and nail to keep gone. The Republicans will do everything in their power to prevent a left leaning judge from being approved. Republicans have already tried to remove Democratic voters from the voting roster and they aren't going to stop.
Yes I am a pessimist but I don't see changes Trump makes ever going away anytime soon.

Stuff goes in cycles, Athena. It's always a pendulum effect. Because people don't know how to just shut up and be happy. So you go from extreme right, to extreme left. Once everyone has had enough of one they swing drastically to the other. It's a case of people thinking they want something, until they have it, and realising no, they actually don't want that at all.
It has been this way throughout history. And as we know, people who do not learn from history, are doomed to repeat it.

I am reluctant to respond this time because it may make it sound that I advocate violence which I absolutely do not. I very much agree that there is the pendulum effect between right and left. The problem is when you have authoritarianism governments. The reason why these governments were overcome was violence. Chiang Kai Shek violence, the Romanovs Violence, Mussolini violence ,Hitler violence. Even though Russia quickly went back to authoritarianism, the communist party was overthrown partly because of violence.
The Chinese communist party and the Kim family of North Korea are still around.
I fear that with the Current American government their policies aren't going anywhere anytime soon. Trump and Jar Jar Musk are currently looking at how to cut the power of the courts reducing any chance at peacefully returning to a more balanced system.
