Federal agencies flag over 100 words that violate Trump's "anti-woke" initiative

Memos from the administration of President Donald Trump, revealed last Friday by the New York Times (NYT), have flagged over 100 words that government agencies should limit or avoid. The Times compiled a full list of the terms from government memos, official and unofficial agency guidances, and other documents.   

The list contains mostly inoffensive phrases and terms, including "black," "women," and "political." The list itself is most likely incomplete, as more agency memos may exist other than the ones already discovered by NYT reporters. It isn't a complete list, but a common theme among the terms listed is that they all relate to diversity and GOP pain points, such as "clean energy" or "injustice."

While the purges have erased transgender and non-binary people, the recently revealed list of terms indicates that other groups could be targeted in the same manner, including Indigenous Americans, African-Americans, gay people, and even women (regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity).

Despite the suppression, President Trump declares himself a champion of free speech, so much so that Trump signed an executive order on his first day back in office titled, "Restoring Freedom of Speech and Ending Federal Censorship," In which it states "Government censorship of speech is intolerable in a free society." The order has largely been understood as providing legal protection to federal employees who exhibit discriminatory behavior.

It would be interesting to see the entire list of banned terms and phrases.

We could start a new word game, constructing sentences using only the banned words and phrases.  ;D

Notes: Some terms listed with a plus sign represent combinations of words that, when used together, acknowledge transgender people, which is not in keeping with the current federal government's position that there are only two, immutable sexes. Any term collected above was included on at least one agency's list, which does not necessarily imply that other agencies are also discouraged from using it.

The above terms appeared in government memos, in official and unofficial agency guidance and in other documents viewed by The New York Times. Some ordered the removal of these words from public-facing websites, or ordered the elimination of other materials (including school curricula) in which they might be included.

Wow. How does any government agency function without including the word "status" in their reports?

Oh my stars!  What a list.  Almost impossible to not use these these words, especially in governance!
The loss of 70 years of progress.  Fostering intolerance AGAIN!

And no wonder I don't want to leave the house.

Interesting that "pride" did not make the list, but "political" did.

I am wondering how the Veterans Administration will be able to function without using medical terms like "status", "disability", "historically", "men", "women", "female", "trauma", "systemic", "mental health", "accessible", "at-risk", and "belong".

I'm cautious now about being out at the VA.  I'm losing my trust.  When queried, "Are LGBTQ+ rights and treatments impacted by the DoD policy changes last week? Situation is frightening."  My caregivers at the LGBTQ+ Services replied:  "Dear Richelle, We have seen the policy changes from the new administration you are referring to, and understand how the situation is concerning.  For now, I have spoken to our our acting Chief of Staff, and she has assured me that at this moment we don't have any guidance to modify any of our clinical care in this area... and all of your providers remain ready to support you."

That was the response I got as well.

My Primary specified that as long as she is my Primary and the Rapid City Clinic is my treatment facility, my treatment will not change.

My concern is that when I move, I will have a new facility and a new Primary. Does that mean the changes only apply to "new" patients? So far, the VA website has not been scrubbed thoroughly, and there are still references to Gender Affirming Care. I am watching it closely.

wastage is in the verbs and adjectives, but there are hundreds of nouns
that can be got rid of as well. It isn't only the synonyms; there are also
the antonyms. After all, what justification is there for a word which is
simply the opposite of some other word? A word contains its opposite in
itself. Take "good", for instance. If you have a word like "good", what
need is there for a word like "bad"? "Ungood" will do just as well--better,
because it's an exact opposite, which the other is not. Or again, if you
want a stronger version of "good", what sense is there in having a whole
string of vague useless words like "excellent" and "splendid" and all the
rest of them? "Plusgood" covers the meaning, or "doubleplusgood" if you
want something stronger still. Of course we use those forms already. but
in the final version of Newspeak there'll be nothing else. In the end the
whole notion of goodness and badness will be covered by only six words--in
reality, only one word. Don't you see the beauty of that, Winston? It was
B.B.'s idea originally, of course,' he added as an afterthought.

A sort of vapid eagerness flitted across Winston's face at the mention of
Big Brother. Nevertheless Syme immediately detected a certain lack of
enthusiasm.

'You haven't a real appreciation of Newspeak, Winston,' he said almost
sadly. 'Even when you write it you're still thinking in Oldspeak. I've read
some of those pieces that you write in "The Times" occasionally. They're
good enough, but they're translations. In your heart you'd prefer to stick
to Oldspeak, with all its vagueness and its useless shades of meaning.
You don't grasp the beauty of the destruction of words. Do you know that
Newspeak is the only language in the world whose vocabulary gets smaller
every year?'

Winston did know that, of course. He smiled, sympathetically he hoped, not
trusting himself to speak. Syme bit off another fragment of the
dark-coloured bread, chewed it briefly, and went on:

'Don't you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of
thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible,
because there will be no words in which to express it. Every concept that
can ever be needed, will be expressed by exactly one word, with its meaning
rigidly defined and all its subsidiary meanings rubbed out and forgotten.
Already, in the Eleventh Edition, we're not far from that point. But the
process will still be continuing long after you and I are dead. Every year
fewer and fewer words, and the range of consciousness always a little
smaller. Even now, of course, there's no reason or excuse for committing
thoughtcrime. It's merely a question of self-discipline, reality-control.
But in the end there won't be any need even for that. The Revolution will
be complete when the language is perfect. Newspeak is Ingsoc and Ingsoc
is Newspeak,' he added with a sort of mystical satisfaction. 'Has it ever
occurred to you, Winston, that by the year 2050, at the very latest, not a
single human being will be alive who could understand such a conversation
as we are having now?'

'Except----' began Winston doubtfully, and he stopped.

It had been on the tip of his tongue to say 'Except the proles,' but he
checked himself, not feeling fully certain that this remark was not in
some way unorthodox. Syme, however, had divined what he was about to say.

'The proles are not human beings,' he said carelessly. 'By 2050--earlier,
probably--all real knowledge of Oldspeak will have disappeared. The whole
literature of the past will have been destroyed. Chaucer, Shakespeare,
Milton, Byron--they'll exist only in Newspeak versions, not merely changed
into something different, but actually changed into something contradictory
of what they used to be. Even the literature of the Party will change.
Even the slogans will change. How could you have a slogan like "freedom is
slavery" when the concept of freedom has been abolished? The whole climate
of thought will be different. In fact there will be no thought, as we
understand it now. Orthodoxy means not thinking--not needing to think.
Orthodoxy is unconsciousness.' "

Fascinating!  Never read it, or maybe I have, back 50 years ago.  I get the cultural references frequently and understand them.  Its looking like I'd better get a copy.

Yeah some people are just cancerous for the world. And some people are bad for supporting them. It's crazy.

Every sci fi writer who ever dreamed something like this... to see it actually happen must be monumentally freaky.
