Story by Ken Schultz (11 March 2025)

When Nico Carney came out as transgender a few years ago, the first people he told were his trans peers, his parents and some longtime close friends.

His coming out conversations with them went well, and he found the love and support he needed.

After that, he realized that coming out as trans was still going to be a lot of work, telling all of the people in his life about his new name, pronouns and other aspects of his authentic self.

Since he was regularly getting stagetime as a stand-up comic in the New York City scene, Carney realized he had a ready-made platform to get himself used to those important conversations.

Once his career began to grow in New York, and even outside of the city, Carney realized that through telling his story, he was also representing his community to some people who might be encountering an out trans person for the first time.

"What's attractive to me about it is this opportunity to be talking about transness to a room of people that don't necessarily know much about it," he said. "And what they do is funneled through all the nonsense that we're getting right now. So it's cool to get to show them an actual lived experience in a way that's light and funny and also allows me to be the one in control."
