Story by Abby Monteil (18 March 2025)

82 members of the House of Representatives, all Democrats, have submitted a letter opposing the implementation of the Trump administration's anti-trans passport restrictions.

After Trump signed a January executive order legally defining gender as male or female as assigned at birth, many trans Americans began reporting changes to their passport documents as a result. In February, seven trans Americans represented by the ACLU sued the U.S. District Court over Trump's new passport policy, saying that the government's refusal to allow gender marker changes violates their constitutional rights.

In response to the State Department's request that the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) collect public comments on the passport policy changes, 82 of the House's 213 Democrats sent a public letter to OMB Director Russell Vought on Monday demanding that the OMB reject attempts to implement Trump's passport policy. The letter also explains that the policies decrease passport accuracy, endanger trans people, and raise "serious constitutional concerns." According to a press release, they are led by Congressional Equality Caucus Co-Chairs Rep. Julie Johnson and Rep. Emily Randall, and CEC Members Rep. Kevin Mullin and Rep. Gabe Amo.

I bet the letter contained strong words.

All talk and no action. No Articles of Impeachment. No calls for a Convention of the States. Just letters and strong words.

We don't need more talk. We need action.
