Hungary to vote on 'fascist' anti-LGBT+ and trans law – what does it mean for other basic rights?

Politicians in Hungary are set to vote on new controversial laws that would see the rights of LGBTQ+ people in the country restricted. Critics have called the constitutional amendment both a crackdown on the freedoms of assembly and expression by the populist government.
The amendment would permanently codify a ban on public events held by LGBTQ+ communities — including the popular Pride event that draws thousands annually in the capital, Budapest. It is very likely to be passed next week by prime minister Viktor Orbán's nationalist Fidesz party, which holds a two-thirds majority in parliament.
It will also allow gender identities to be denied on a constitutional basis, as well as the sexual characteristics of minority groups. This is alongside allowing Hungarians to have their citizenship suspended if they are deemed to pose a threat to Hungary's security or sovereignty.
Local organisers have called the amendment 'fascism,' while lawmakers that introduced it claim it is in the interest of protecting children. Opposition party Momentum says it will attempt to block the vote to prevent Orbán's party from "leading [Hungary] down the Putin road."
